Conservancy Manager - Letea

Role Overview

Letea Community Conservancy is seeking a Conservancy Manager to lead both the strategic direction and the day-to-day running of the conservancy. Reporting to the Conservancy Board through the Board Chairman and working hand-in-hand with the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT), the Manager will shape and drive a financially sustainable, community-owned operating model. The role is central to protecting wildlife and habitat, supporting livestock-based livelihoods, developing tourism and other enterprises, and ensuring that local people see clear and lasting benefits from conservation.

Key Responsibilities

• Coordinate all core conservancy activities, including wildlife and habitat protection, livestock programmes, security operations, and community development projects.
• Strengthen relationships with community members, pastoralist families, local leaders and other stakeholders to build a shared sense of ownership and long-term commitment to conservation.
• Manage, coach and mentor conservancy staff, setting performance standards and conducting regular appraisals to sustain a productive and motivated team.
• Oversee the conservancy’s finances, including budgets, expenditures and revenue generation, while ensuring transparent records and full compliance with NRT and donor financial regulations.
• Develop and implement efficient procedures across administration, logistics and asset management to keep conservancy operations effective and well-organised.
• Prepare project proposals, funding applications and donor reports that clearly demonstrate the value and impact of the conservancy’s work.
• Support capacity building of Board committees and guide the development of infrastructure in ways that encourage community ownership and long-term sustainability.
• Lead peace-building initiatives and create space for women and youth to contribute meaningfully to collaboration, resilience and governance within the conservancy.

Requirements & Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s degree in conservation, natural resource management, wildlife management, rangeland management, community development, or a closely related field from a recognised university.
• A minimum of five years of relevant work experience, with a proven ability to achieve results in a conservation or community-based natural resource management context.
• Strong creative and analytical problem-solving skills, combined with the capacity to work independently and to collaborate effectively in teams.
• Demonstrated experience working with a diverse range of stakeholders, including pastoralist communities, and leading or motivating multidisciplinary teams.
• Solid knowledge of wildlife conservation and natural resource management, along with a genuine understanding of pastoralist customary livestock practices and community engagement processes.
• Ability to work effectively in remote, cross-cultural settings with people from varied economic and professional backgrounds.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with strong spoken and written proficiency in both English and Kiswahili.
• Good computer literacy and familiarity with relevant software for budgeting, reporting and day-to-day administrative work.
• Strong leadership presence and facilitation skills, particularly when working with mixed groups to build consensus and advance shared goals.
