Role Overview
The Clinical Officer steps into a frontline clinical post at a health facility in Elwak, Mandera County, reporting to the Medical Officer in Charge or the Health Facility Manager. Day to day, this means seeing patients from first contact through to discharge — taking histories, examining, ordering and interpreting investigations, deciding on treatment, and holding the clinical thread across both outpatient and inpatient settings. The role matters because it puts qualified diagnostic and emergency decision-making directly in the hands of a community where timely access to a clinician can determine how an illness resolves.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive patient interviews and physical examinations, then reach working and definitive diagnoses by weighing clinical findings alongside laboratory and diagnostic results.
- Build treatment plans grounded in current national clinical guidelines, prescribe medications appropriately, and adjust therapy as patient response evolves.
- Counsel patients and their families on their conditions, deliver health education, schedule follow-up reviews, and make referrals to specialist services when care needs exceed the facility's scope.
- Carry out routine medical and minor surgical procedures that fall within the approved scope of clinical practice for a registered Clinical Officer.
- Lead triage when emergencies arrive, deliver initial stabilization, and organize prompt referral or transfer of patients who need a higher level of care.
- Uphold infection prevention and control standards across all clinical activity and ensure medical equipment is used safely and correctly.
- Keep complete, confidential patient records in both electronic and paper systems — capturing every consultation, prescription, laboratory request, and outcome without delay.
- Work alongside nursing, pharmacy, laboratory, and community health colleagues to keep care coordinated and continuous for each patient.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Clinical Medicine and Surgery from a recognized, accredited institution.
- Current registration with the Clinical Officers Council (COC) of Kenya, backed by a valid and unrestricted practicing license.
- At least three years of continuous clinical practice in a busy hospital, health centre, or outpatient clinic environment.
- Solid working command of primary healthcare protocols, infection prevention and control guidance, pharmacology, and medical ethics.
- Composure and fast, sound judgment in high-pressure emergency situations.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with genuine empathy for patients and the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary clinical teams.
- Unwavering commitment to patient confidentiality, professional integrity, and acting as an advocate for those in your care.
