Role Overview
Alupe University is seeking a qualified Medical Laboratory Technologist to act as the technical backbone of its medical laboratory sciences teaching laboratory. The person in this post plans and runs bench practicals, keeps diagnostic and teaching equipment calibrated and serviceable, and safeguards the standards of biosafety, specimen handling and quality control that underpin every session. The role matters because students cannot develop genuine diagnostic competence without dependable, well-supervised bench time and a laboratory that is properly equipped, stocked and safe.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and set up practical classes, demonstrations and assessments across haematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, parasitology, histology and immunology, including reagents, stains, culture media, controls and specimen materials.
- Demonstrate correct laboratory technique to students and supervise them as they practise procedures, offering corrective feedback on pipetting, staining, microscopy, culture work and instrument handling.
- Operate, calibrate and troubleshoot laboratory instruments such as microscopes, centrifuges, incubators, autoclaves, spectrophotometers and analysers, and keep maintenance, fault and repair logs up to date.
- Carry out internal quality control, record results, and maintain the documentation needed for laboratory accreditation and inspection.
- Monitor reagent and consumable stock levels, raise requisitions, verify deliveries and store materials under the correct conditions.
- Enforce laboratory safety and infection control, including correct use of personal protective equipment and the safe handling and disposal of biological specimens, sharps and chemical waste.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, practical work, equipment use and sample handling, and supply data when it is requested.
- Support staff and postgraduate research by processing and analysing samples and advising colleagues and students on laboratory methods and equipment use.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences or Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognised and accredited institution.
- Registration with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB) in good standing.
- A valid and current practising licence issued by KMLTTB.
- Experience in a busy hospital clinical laboratory, a university health sciences teaching laboratory, or a registered tertiary-level clinical research laboratory is an added advantage.
- Demonstrated merit and ability in facilitating practical demonstrations, managing laboratory equipment, or supervising students in an academic or training setup.
- Proficiency in computer applications.
