Job Description

Role Overview

You will join a Business Intelligence team that owns all internal and external reporting for the organisation. Your day-to-day work involves turning raw business questions into finished reporting products: you will consult with stakeholders to define what success looks like, judge whether a requested calculation or data source is viable, and then design and build the necessary data flows and visualisations. The role sits at the intersection of data engineering and analysis, so you will spend part of each week developing ETL pipelines in Python and the rest creating and refining dashboards in Tableau.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work directly with business stakeholders to clarify reporting requirements, assess their feasibility, and propose solutions that fit the existing reporting portfolio.
  • Design, write, and maintain ETL pipelines in Python, ensuring data is reliably extracted, transformed, and loaded into the reporting environment.
  • Develop and maintain Tableau workbooks and dashboards, applying thoughtful visualisation choices so that complex data is easy to interpret.
  • Write and optimise SQL queries against relational databases, including performance tuning on large tables and complex joins.
  • Contribute to defining and measuring company KPIs by recommending appropriate statistical methods and metrics.
  • Participate in code reviews and version control workflows using Git, following team conventions for branch management and release processes.
  • Evaluate emerging BI tools, libraries, and data technologies, providing recommendations on whether they should be adopted.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of professional experience in a BI, data analysis, or data engineering role.
  • Strong programming skills in Python or another scripting/programming language, with the ability to write clear, maintainable code.
  • Advanced SQL proficiency, including aggregations, window functions, and subqueries.
  • Hands-on experience with any relational database management system, including indexing, query planning, and performance optimisation.
  • Experience using Git for version control, including branching, merging, and resolving conflicts.
  • Solid working knowledge of Excel, including formulas, pivot tables, and data manipulation.
  • Familiarity with building reports or visualisations in Tableau, such as creating dashboards, calculated fields, and data connections.
  • Comfort working in a Linux environment both as an end user and as a developer; Debian knowledge is a plus.
  • Comfort using Windows as a user and developer, including installing and configuring software and debugging environment issues.

Ideal qualifications (not required, but valuable):

  • In-depth knowledge of PostgreSQL, including advanced features, stored procedures, and backup/recovery.
  • Experience with software development best practices such as automated testing, CI/CD, and clean coding standards.
  • Administration experience with Windows Server environments.
  • Administration and setup experience with Debian servers.
  • Working proficiency in Java or C/C++.
  • Practical experience with Docker or other container technologies.
  • Deep understanding of the Tableau platform, including data preparation, server administration, or extension development.
