GiveDirectly is the first — and largest — nonprofit that lets donors like you send money directly to the world’s poorest. We believe people living in poverty deserve the dignity to choose for themselves how best to improve their lives — cash enables that choice. ,Since 2009, we’ve delivered over $140 million in cash directly into the hands of over 130,000 families living in poverty. ,We read the research. We read more research. Then we did our own research. And it turns out, people use cash on medicine; cows and goats and chickens; school fees; water; solar lights; tin roofs; irrigation; motorcycles to jumpstart taxi services; businesses to generate income; and more. Job Description

Role Overview

As an Associate Field Manager, you will be the operational backbone of GiveDirectly’s recipient enrollment efforts in Kaloleni, Kenya. Your days will revolve around leading a team of Field Officers, ensuring that every household enrollment is conducted with precision and empathy, and that data flows cleanly from the field to decision-makers. By bridging the gap between on-the-ground realities and senior leadership, you will directly shape how efficiently and respectfully GiveDirectly serves recipients in this community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Field Operations Leadership: Translate the rolling field work plan into daily action, adjusting routes and schedules as conditions change. Coordinate team movements across target communities, track enrollment progress week by week, and flag emerging bottlenecks to the Field Manager before they become setbacks. Facilitate weekly debriefs to surface risks, pain points, and improvement ideas.
  • Team Management and Development: Cultivate a supportive, high-performing team culture through regular one-on-one check-ins, group huddles, and recognition of individual wins. Manage leave schedules to protect work-life balance, onboard new hires, and reinforce GiveDirectly’s values. When performance gaps appear, provide coaching, initiate improvement plans, and participate in formal evaluations. Organize monthly team-building activities to strengthen cohesion.
  • Quality Assurance and Data Analysis: Run weekly desktop audits of Field Officer deliverables and produce quality reports. Conduct spot checks at every enrollment stage, shadow team members using the Field Shadowing tool, and deliver targeted coaching on survey administration. Analyze field data weekly to extract actionable insights, then share findings with your team and the Field Manager. Facilitate training sessions based on quality assessment results.
  • Process Improvement and Troubleshooting: Personally complete at least two household surveys each week to stay close to the work and spot inefficiencies. Pilot new quality management tools and provide honest feedback on their usefulness. Join brainstorming sessions to refine targeting criteria—especially clauses that drive high exclusion rates—and coordinate with the Field Manager when additional data (such as PPI, JMMI, or baseline indicators) is needed.
  • Administrative and Financial Oversight: Submit weekly stock count certificates and ensure recipient phones reach the office in line with enrollment targets. Request and update enrollment flyers monthly with the admin team. Issue protective equipment, replace worn field gear, and troubleshoot device problems. Approve monthly airtime allowances and submit accurate timesheets plus transport expenditure reconciliations on a weekly and monthly basis.
  • Stakeholder and Community Engagement: Build productive relationships with administrative leaders at the location and sublocation levels to secure buy-in for field operations. Log all stakeholder interactions in the engagement tracking system and prepare detailed reports. Maintain positive ties with community leaders so that escalated cases—including safeguarding and impersonation incidents—are resolved quickly and fairly.
  • Risk Management and Community Intelligence: Continuously scan for cultural, logistical, and operational risks, escalating them to the Field Manager as needed. Assess security risks across different areas of Kaloleni Sub-County, update relevant documentation, and maintain the risk matrix with new threats or trends (such as internal leaks).
  • Impact Storytelling and External Support: Identify compelling stories from the field and share them with the content team to amplify program impact. Support the Field Manager during visits from donors, journalists, and other external stakeholders.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Development Studies, or a closely related discipline.
  • At least three years of experience leading teams in the humanitarian or development sector, with a demonstrated ability to manage people in remote or resource-constrained environments.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational abilities—you can turn raw data into clear reports using tools like Excel or Google Sheets.
  • Deep familiarity with Kaloleni and its surrounding areas, including local communities, customs, security dynamics, and terrain.
  • High integrity, empathy, and a genuine commitment to GiveDirectly’s values and core competencies: emotional intelligence, problem solving, project management, follow-through, and fostering inclusivity.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Fluency in the Giriama language is required.
  • Experience with digital data collection tools, community engagement, financial reconciliation, or social protection programs will be an added advantage.
