Role Overview
This is a hands-on coaching role for someone who likes being close to a delivery team and equally comfortable working across a wider programme of work. Day to day, you will sit alongside one or more Agile teams, helping them turn Agile principles into habits that survive real deadlines, shifting priorities, and cross-team dependencies, while also connecting that work to the priorities of the wider Agile Release Train. The role exists because International Health is actively maturing how it works — teams need a coach who can build capability rather than simply run ceremonies, and who can make delivery progress, risks, and blockers visible enough for the organisation to act on them.
This is a fixed-term engagement running through 30 September 2026, positioned on the contributor career track.
Key Responsibilities
- Coach individuals and teams on Agile values, principles, and practices, adapting the approach to each team's context rather than applying a single template.
- Build the conditions for self-management by strengthening collaboration, transparency, psychological safety, and shared ownership of outcomes.
- Facilitate team cadence events — planning sessions, team syncs, backlog refinement, reviews, retrospectives, and improvement workshops — keeping each one purposeful and focused on outcomes.
- Help teams set commitments they can realistically meet, grounded in actual capacity, requirement clarity, known dependencies, and delivery risk.
- Track and share the metrics and qualitative signals that show flow, predictability, quality, delivery maturity, and value delivered, and use them to guide improvement conversations.
- Drive improvement work to completion: turn retrospective insights into agreed actions, follow through on them, and keep continuous learning and built-in quality part of everyday practice.
- Identify, make visible, and help remove impediments, dependencies, and blockers, escalating systemic issues promptly and shielding the team from avoidable disruption.
- Partner with Product Owners, Release Train Engineers, Agile Product Managers, subject matter experts, and business and technology stakeholders in a matrixed structure, and take part in ART-level events such as PI Planning, ART Sync, Coach Sync, System Demo, and Inspect & Adapt, along with Scrum Master forums and Agile communities of practice.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Certified Scrum Master (CSM), SAFe Scrum Master, SAFe Advanced Scrum Master, Professional Scrum Master, or an equivalent Agile certification.
- At least four years of proven experience working as a Scrum Master or Agile Team Coach.
- Demonstrated experience facilitating team development and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Strong working knowledge of Lean-Agile principles, Scrum, Kanban, and team-level Agile delivery.
- Practical experience with the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) and a solid grasp of its underlying principles and practices.
- Excellent communication, facilitation, coaching, mentoring, and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams spread across multiple locations and time zones.
- Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and organisational skills.
- Comfort managing shifting priorities and supporting teams that are working to delivery deadlines.
- Ability to engage effectively with subject matter experts, Product Owners, Agile Product Managers, and stakeholders within a matrixed structure.
- Knowledge of IT concepts, the software delivery lifecycle, delivery methodologies, architectural considerations, and technical standards.
Desired qualifications, skills, and experience
- Working knowledge of Jira, Confluence, Mural, or comparable collaboration and planning tools.
- Experience supporting product, platform, operational, or service-based delivery teams.
- Experience facilitating organisational change or Agile transformation efforts.
- Background in software development lifecycle, IT delivery, product delivery, or project management.
What Success Looks Like in This Role
- Teams take greater ownership of their delivery outcomes and manage themselves more effectively.
- Impediments, blockers, dependencies, and delivery risks surface early and get addressed rather than accumulating.
- Cadence events are purposeful, outcome-driven, and continually refined.
- Hard metrics and qualitative insight are routinely used to improve flow, predictability, quality, and transparency for stakeholders.
- Teams sustain a healthy pace while staying aligned with ART priorities and International Health business goals.
- Continuous improvement is embedded in how teams operate, not treated as a periodic exercise.
