Taking inspiration from the 600-year legacy of outstanding education in the UK, and recent opening experience of Durham School for Girls Doha, Durham will open in Nairobi in September 2020 with its first phase, Durham International Nursery for children aged 3-6 years. The wider ambitions of the project are to establish a full Primary and a Secondary School. Durham International Nursery will provide a safe, happy and caring environment in which children years can spend their formative years, nurturing their individual needs in a supportive and inclusive environment.
Located in a high-end leafy suburb of Nairobi, close to a number of consulates and the United Nations headquarters, Durham International Nursery will cater for up to 200 children, offering generous space for teaching and learning, a swimming pool, outdoor activity areas and indoor spaces for expressive arts and design.
Job Description
Summary of Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
- Contribute to the production of a departmental development plan, updated annually.
- Contribute to the production and regular update of the schemes of work and curriculum documents.
- Take responsibility for the teaching of public examination courses as allocated by the timetable.
- Contribute to the overall curriculum planning of the school.
- Plan and prepare courses and lessons in accordance with published schemes of work.
- Teach the assigned students, including setting and marking of work and assessments in line with school policy.
- Assess, record and report on the development, progress and attainment of students in line with school policy.
- Communicate with parents and inform/consult Class Teacher, Form Tutor, Head of Year, Deputy Head and/or Principal as appropriate.
- Maintain records of books and equipment assigned to the department, having due regard to security.
- Contribute to the organisation of trips within the department.
Qualifications, Background and Experience
- Have a good honours degree and a teacher training qualification for the 11 to 18 age range.
- Have a minimum of two years teaching experience, ideally five or more years teaching experience.
- Be able to teach Science up to KS3 and Physics up to IGCSE and A Level or IB.
- Have a valid Teacher Services Commission Certificate (if applying from Kenya) or Qualified Teacher
- Status (QTS) or a general education degree (for overseas applicants).
- Be a skilled classroom practitioner, having a good subject knowledge and an awareness of teaching methodology
