Description: The Mater Hospital was opened in 1962 by the Sisters of Mercy, a Catholic Order of Nuns originating from Ireland, three years after registering themselves as the Registered Trustees of an entity under the Perpetual Succession Act (the succeeding legislation after independence). The "Sisters of Mercy" first set up a 60 bed general hospital to cater mainly for the poor, indigenous Kenyans, with the primary mission being general healthcare. The colonial authorities granted 12 acres of land in a swampy, mosquito-infested area, which has since become the Industrial Area of Nairobi. In 1970, a 60-bed maternity ward was opened with antenatal, postnatal and immunization clinics attached in order to upgrade the quality of maternity healthcare available to the poorer segments of the Nairobi population. Job Description

The COSECSA postgraduate training program is a 5-year general surgery program at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital training site. An award of Fellowship in General Surgery FCS (ECSA) is awarded at the end of the training.

 

Main Duties:

 

Conducting emergency calls, clerking surgical patients, admitting and investigating them in consultation with the surgeons on call or senior residents in the hospital, for guidance and supervision.

 

Attending lectures, training seminars, conducting or participating in ward rounds.

 

Rotating in different institutions/ stations, as determined by the training programme management to attain requisite skills.

 

Offering surgical care including participating in surgical out-patient or consultation clinics,

 

Participating in surgical operations, reviewing patients, and following them, under their seniors’ supervision and instructions.

 

Researching, CME seminars, teaching of junior staff like medical officers and interns and nurses to provide additional professional skills and management qualities.

 

Participating in quality improvement initiatives and giving reports as required

 

Required Qualifications for the Position

 

Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB ChB)

 

Minimum 2 years post internship.

 

Training in ACLS & ATLS

 

Registered with KMPDC with a valid practicing license

 

Reference letters from 2 senior colleagues in the medical profession
