Job Description

Main Purpose of the Job- (Job Summary)

 

Provision primary coverage of the Ophthalmology Unit, eye evaluation for ocular, orbital and periorbital conditions including optometry, tonometry, referring as appropriate.  Provide additional coverage of general outpatient and Emergencies at the level of a Medical Officer. 

 

Main Responsibilities

 

Provide consultations at the Ophthalmology Unit and ensure that all assessments and treatment provided are properly documented on patients’ files/electronic medical record

 

Timely surgical management/referrals of eye injuries

 

Perform minor eye surgeries, trachoma surgeries and refer complicated cases appropriately

 

Act as the primary liaison between the nurses, medical officers and the consultant Ophthalmologists on call.

 

Conduct Eye Care Training and Screening exercises as required.

 

Integrate the activities of the Ophthalmology Unit with the Chronic Care Program of the Hospital.

 

Evaluation and provision of prescriptions to those with refractive errors.

 

Timely reporting of departmental activities.

 

Attend and participate in continuous Medical Education (CME) activities at the Hospital/Group.

 

Compile and submit monthly inventory return/requisition of all drugs and supplies.

 

Maintain equipment in good condition and submit regular inventory report of the same.

 

Carry out any other duties as may be required or assigned by your immediate supervisor in line with the job description.

 

Ensure adequate knowledge of all Avenue policies, procedures and systems as outlined in the HRMIS

Person Specifications

 

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with minimum post internship experience of 1 year

 

Registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council

 

Higher Diploma in Clinical Medicine-Ophthalmology/Cataract surgery

 

Good computer skills (Complete MS Office package and any HMIS (Hospital Information System) and data analysis 

 

Minimum of 2 years' work experience as an ophthalmic Clinical Officer, at least 1 year of inpatient practice
