Job Description

Main Duties:

  • Clinical Review of all patients admitted to ICU/HDU – both hospital and private patients
  • Responsible for commencing appropriate management of every new ICU/ HDU patient before review by registrar or consultant who will then make appropriate adjustments.
  • Drawing blood for blood gas analysis
  • Interpretation of results
  • Immediate action on results. This includes relevant adjustment of ventilator settings, correction of acid-base imbalance plus or minus referring to registrar/ consultant where difficulties arise in interpretation.
  • Emergency intubation of patients
  • Adjustment of ventilator settings where appropriate in consultation with ICU registrar or Primary Consultant.
  • Extubation of patients
  • Insertion of invasive pressure monitoring lines
  • Performing emergency chest tube insertion for tension pneumothorax where surgeon is not immediately available.

Ordering appropriate investigations according the clinical condition of ICU/HDU patients i.e. X-rays

  • Laboratory investigations.
  • Other radiological tests
  • Ultrasound
  • Electrocardiogram
  • Echocardiogram
  • Responsible for communication of clinical information concerning patients to other relevant specialists and colleagues on phone.
  • Accompanies Primary Consultant and other Specialists taking care of patients on their rounds in the unit.
  • In the absence of the Registrar or Primary Consultant, the ICU MO will be the team leader in any resuscitation in the unit.
  • Reviews patients in other areas of the hospital where a request for ICU/HDU admission has been made.
  • Will make appropriate decisions on any immediate interventions required as well as transport requirements.
  • Will follow standing hospital policies concerning admission to the ICU/HDU.
  • Responsible for transporting patients to the CT scan room as per guidelines on Transfer of patients for CT scan.
  • When available, may assist in insertion of intravenous cannula or phlebotomy in the wards or other clinical areas of the hospital where the casualty doctor or ward doctor has been unsuccessful.
  • Will from time to time prepare topics for Continuous Medical Education during ICU departmental meetings.
  • Assists in training of nursing staff on various aspects of ICU/HDU patient management.
  • You shall Participate in quality improvement initiatives within the department and provide reports as required.

Required Qualifications for the Position

  • MBChB
  • Registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners & Dentist Council (KMPDC) a valid current practising license.
  • 3 years post-internship
  • Critical Care experience is highly desirable
  • Keen on detail with a high degree of accuracy
  • Good communication skills
