FSD Africa has three main areas of work: Finance for all: Interventions designed to increase access to finance to empower and reduce the vulnerability of the poor. Finance for growth: Interventions designed to provide capital to investment-ready sectors to drive inclusive economic growth and reduce poverty through increased prosperity. Regional platform: Interventions designed to foster collaboration, best practice sharing and harmonisation between the FSD Network and other partners to improve effectiveness and achieve value for money. What is FSD Africa’s strategy? To provide focus and to deliver on these areas, FSD Africa’s Strategic Plan (2013-2018) structures work into four pillars. Pillar 1: Skills development and training. Interventions to increase skills, capacity and performance of financial institutions, financial sector professionals and the local services markets that support them across Africa. Pillar 2: Growth and Investment. Interventions designed to build financial markets that more efficiently mobilise and allocate capital to businesses and projects that drive inclusive economic growth. Pillar 3: Inclusive programmes. Targeted, market-building interventions in five priority areas (including agriculture finance, digital payments, savings groups, housing finance and credit markets) and launched and scaled regionally. Pillar 4: Regional platform. Products and services to build and transfer skills and knowledge across countries and between financial sector development partners, especially the FSD Network. Job Description

The Manager, Investments is responsible for executing deals in line with financial and impact goals, managing a delegated portfolio of investments from sourcing and origination through to deal close and post-close, ensuring that all investment activities are conducted in accordance with FSDAi’s policies, procedures, and guidelines, and that all investment decisions are made in alignment with FSDAi’s risk appetite.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ROLE REQUIREMENTS

 

Market Intelligence & Analysis

 

Ensure that comprehensive market research and analysis is carried out in order to identify and assess investment opportunities that align with FSDAi's investment strategy:

 

Collaborate with the Principal, Investments and other colleagues to define screening parameters for identifying and assessing investment opportunities, ensuring they align with FSDAi’s investment strategy; includes identifying key metrics, data sources, and criteria

 

Develop a comprehensive screening plan outlining the specific areas to be investigated, screening methodologies to be used, timelines for completion, and responsible team members

 

Lead and manage the screening process, leveraging various sources to conduct quality market and investment opportunity analysis to identify and evaluate potential investment opportunities

 

Analyse the screening data, identify key trends and insights, and assess the potential of investment opportunities; analyse industry trends that will impact on investee performance and achievement of theory of change outcomes

 

Prepare clear and concise screening papers summarizing the findings and assessments of potential investment opportunities; track and steadily reduce the number of occasions where substantive issues are missed, documenting the learning gleaned from each instance

 

 Investment Process Management

 

Manage a delegated portfolio of investments from sourcing and origination to deal close and post-close to execute deals in-line with financial and impact goals:

 

Lead the investment engagement process from sourcing and origination through to deal close and post-close. Ensure that all aspects of the investment process are conducted in accordance with FSDAi’s policies and guidelines

 

Support the Principal, Investments in structuring individual investments that align with the investment strategy for the portfolio under management; includes developing financial models, conducting due diligence, and recommending terms 

 

Ensure that the Investment Process Management team works collaboratively with the Risk & Legal team at all stages of the investment cycle

 

Show rigour in: The identification and vetting of opportunities as they fit into the investment strategy. The preparation of financial models and risk/return projections. Financial modelling and valuations of opportunities and investments and forecasting individual investment returns and overall portfolio returns. Presenting a credible and convincing case on investment opportunities with the CIO to the Investment Committee. Managing and executing on legal documents, due diligence, and agreements.

 

Portfolio Performance

 

Manage a designated portfolio of investments, ensuring that the provisions of each contract are delivered on time; support investees in achieving the anticipated return on investment:

Monitor the performance of the designated portfolio of investments, ensuring that all required data collection, analysis, and reporting are delivered on time and to standard; this includes tracking financial performance, social impact metrics, and compliance with contractual obligations

 

Proactively identify and address any issues or challenges that may arise in the management of the portfolio; swiftly escalate any concerns to the Deal Team lead

 

Contribute towards the analysis of both individual investments and overall portfolio performance; generate insights on lessons learned, opportunities for improvement, and possibilities for scaling up successful approaches 

 

Lead the preparation of reports and analysis of investment and fund activities, dealing with specific queries from within the team or from stakeholders

 

Risk & Compliance

 

Liaise with the Risk team to develop and implement a risk management strategy for each investment under management (e.g. provisions of contract, monitoring plans, capacity-building):

Ensure that all risk management actions required of the Manager & Associate are carried out on time and to standard

 

Work closely with the FSDAi senior management to maintain a strong culture of risk and compliance management within the Investment team

 

Ensure that all investment activities are conducted in accordance with FSDAi’s investment policy, processes, and guidelines, ensuring 100% compliance with all relevant risk and compliance requirements

 

Take personal responsibility for ensuring that there are zero losses for FSDAi as a result of the manager or associate failing to adhere to good legal practice or agreed risk and compliance management processes

Build and nurture strong, positive, relationships with investors, investees and other stakeholders relevant to the portfolio of investments under management:

PERSON SPECIFICATIONS

 

Qualifications and Education

 

Master's degree and 6 years of experience or bachelor’s degree and 8 years of experience

 

Experience in investment related field with transactional experience

 

Excellent skills in written and spoken English

 

 

Education: Degree, Diploma
