We establish market access to eyeglasses and vision correction for people living in poverty so that they may enhance their livelihoods, learning, and quality of life. To date, VisionSpring has sold nearly three million pairs of glasses to low income consumers living in emerging and frontier markets, and is working to reach 10 million pairs by the symbolic year 2020. As a social enterprise, social change motivates us first. Our focus on sales and revenue targets serves and advances our mission objective - to correct refractive error with eyeglasses so that low income consumers may experience improved functioning, productivity and income earning potential on a sustained basis. We are working to transform the systemic dysfunction of the optical market which has failed to deliver a 700 year old technology to 644 million consumers who earn less than $4 a day. We serve low income consumers not as beneficiaries but as customers. Our customers expect a high quality, affordable product and are willing to spend limited discretionary income for the immediate and tangible benefits of vision correction. By selling glasses we awaken new demand and seed a viable market. By selling new eyeglasses we are able to serve four times as many people per dollar input than the next alternative of donating recycled ones . To efficiently scale, we must deliver each new unit with less cost. Organizationally, we are a hybrid. We are a registered 501(c)3 non-profit and a Private Limited Company (PLC). We earn revenue and supplement it with contributed income. We hire change makers and pay bonuses and commissions. We run our business on both sales metrics and social impact measures. We exploit a range of organizational forms and practices to get the job done.
Job Description

Job Requirements

 

Required

 

4+ years of M&E experience in a global health and/or development context, ideally spanning multiple country contexts.

 

Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline or deep expertise in data and evidence devolved through relevant work experience.

 

Strong quantitative analysis and data visualization skills, with a high degree of proficiency required in Excel and Power BI, is required. Fluency in qualitative research, including data collection and analysis approaches.

 

Reporting experience including donor and internal program reports.

 

Proven experience with Logical framework and KPI development

 

Experience with development field programs and relationship building/management with multiple stakeholders.

 

Experience in understanding and improving data quality for development programs.

 

Excellent communication skills in English, both in speaking and writing.

 

Willingness to travel across Africa as needed.

 

Preferred

 

Master’s degree in a related field such as public health, statistics, or data science is preferred.

 

Deep expertise in qualitative research would be an advantage.

 

Advanced expertise in evaluation and research methods, including randomized controlled trials.

 

Experience delivering capacity building training.

 

Salesforce expertise

 

Understanding of the eyecare sector and the technical data field produced through vision screening.

 

Job Responsibilities

Data Quality improvement

 

Monitor the quality of VisionSpring’s data quality for all Africa programs across paper-based and digital data capture systems through automated data quality reports, randomized spot-checks of raw data capture records, and in-person observation.

 

Work with program managers, system owners and implementation partners to identify the root causes of weak data quality.

 

Implement data quality interventions to address these root causes and measure the impact of those interventions to quantify the extent to which they deliver improvement.

 

Ensure compliance to VisionSpring’s data governance policy and local data protection guidelines.

 

Support the rollout of digital data capture systems for Africa programs.

 

Monitoring, reporting and data visualisation

 

Coordinate monthly collation of data across program pillars and deliver monthly internal reporting on a range of KPIs.

 

Work with program managers to understand the drivers of program performance and synthesize key messages as part of monthly reporting.

 

Serve as the M&E point-person on all Vision Access projects, communicating regularly with field teams and partners and providing direct M&E implementation support.

 

Respond to data requests using a range of descriptive and statistical analyses regarding VisionSpring Africa programs, including:

 

Quantitative summaries for the Africa Leadership team to inform decision making.

 

Quantitative and narrative summaries for fundraising and business development purposes, quarterly and annual reports, external communications, and marketing collateral.

 

Ensure information is provided in a transparent, consistent, verifiable, and compelling manner to all stakeholders.

 

Evaluation and Research

 

Support the development and refinement of logical frameworks for VisionSpring’s programs.

 

Support VisionSpring’s evaluation and research projects in the Africa region, working closely with colleagues in the global Monitoring, Evaluation, Research and Learning team.

 

Design questionnaires and qualitative research interview guides. Test and pilot these research data collection instruments.

 

Conduct and / or oversee survey data collection, qualitative interviews and focus group discussions. Conduct quantitative and qualitative data analysis as appropriate.

 

Act as the point of contact for external research contractors undertaking studies in partnership with VisionSpring in the Africa region.

 

Capacity Building and Evidence Use

 

Ensure team members have easy access to VisionSpring’s data and evidence knowledge base. Assist program teams to develop learning agendas as appropriate.

 

Build the capacity of programs teams in all aspects of data and evidence, including data quality, data analysis, data visualization and the use of data and research evidence to make programmatic decisions through ad-hoc support and dedicated capacity building sessions.

 

Embrace transparency and reveal hard truths, living daily into VisionSpring’s values, to create a culture of learning together which includes learning from both success and failure. Ensure data and evidence contribute to constant adaptation and relentless improvement of VisionSpring’s programs.

 

Work with program teams to document program results and lessons learned. Contribute to program knowledge management, including development and dissemination of tools, materials, reports, papers, and intervention-linked research.
