YouTube Makes AI Labels More Visible and Automatic

YouTube Overhauls AI Labeling for Better Visibility
In response to growing concerns about AI-generated content, YouTube is rolling out significant changes to how it labels synthetic media. Following Google's expanded AI verification efforts at I/O, the platform is moving AI disclosures to more prominent locations on both Shorts and long-form videos. The goal is to make it easier for viewers to identify AI-generated content at a glance.
New Label Placement for Long-Form Videos
For standard YouTube videos, the AI disclosure label now appears directly below the video player, above the description. Previously, this information was hidden in the expanded description under the "How this content was made" section. The new label features an "AI" tag next to a recognizable information symbol, ensuring viewers see it without needing to inspect every video manually.
Key Improvement for User Experience
This change eliminates the need for proactive inspection, making the labeling system far more user-friendly. Viewers can now instantly determine if a video contains synthetic or altered content.
AI Labels on YouTube Shorts
YouTube Shorts will also receive an upgraded AI label, appearing as an overlay directly on the video. The platform previously tested a variation of this label and used an overlay flagging "altered or synthetic content." The new format standardizes the disclosure across all video types.
Automated AI Detection on the Platform
YouTube is expanding beyond manual disclosures by introducing automated detection systems. The platform is rolling out "new internal signals" to automatically identify and label AI-generated videos. While creators must still manually disclose photorealistic AI use, YouTube's systems will now apply labels automatically if significant AI use is detected.
Handling Incorrect Labels
If content is incorrectly flagged, creators can update the disclosure status in YouTube Studio. However, for videos created with YouTube's own AI tools like Veo or Dream Screen, or those containing C2PA metadata indicating full AI generation, the AI disclosures will be permanent.
Tools Behind the Detection
YouTube already uses markers like C2PA and Google's SynthID to detect AI-generated content. These automated systems are now being better utilized to catch photorealistic AI videos that mimic realistic humans and environments.
What These Changes Mean for Creators and Viewers
YouTube states that these updates aim to "make it as easy as possible for creators and viewers to have the right information." Importantly, disclosure labels alone will not impact monetization or recommendation algorithms. The platform is focusing solely on transparency, not penalizing creators for using AI tools.
Consistency in Labeling
Previously, YouTube's AI labeling practices were inconsistent. The new system establishes a single label format for all photorealistic and meaningfully AI-altered content. For unrealistic, animated, or slightly altered content, the disclosure will remain in the expanded description.
Future of AI Content on YouTube
These changes represent a significant step toward a more transparent ecosystem. By combining automated detection with prominent labels, YouTube aims to combat AI slop while supporting creative use of AI tools.
