Windows 11 Indicator Customization Gets a Major Upgrade
Windows 11 users have long wanted more control over where system indicators like volume and brightness pop up. Now, with Microsoft’s latest Windows 11 Dev Channel update, that’s finally changing. The new Windows 11 indicator customization feature allows users to move hardware indicator pop-ups to the top-left or top-center of the screen—making them less intrusive and more aligned with your workflow. These updates are part of a broader usability improvement Microsoft is testing, including a redesigned Recall homepage.
Customize Volume and Brightness Indicators in Windows 11
Previously, system indicators such as volume, brightness, and airplane mode appeared at the bottom center of the screen, sometimes covering app content. With the latest test build, Windows 11 now gives you the option to move these notifications to the top-left or top-center of your display. This small but meaningful change improves accessibility and usability, especially during multitasking or media playback. However, Microsoft has excluded the top-right position to avoid overlap with the minimize and close buttons.
New Recall Homepage Highlights Recent Activity
Alongside Windows 11 indicator customization, Microsoft is introducing a revamped Recall homepage. This dashboard helps users quickly return to their recent tasks by listing the top three most-used apps and websites from the past 24 hours. It also displays recent snapshots of activity, enabling faster re-engagement with what matters most. The left-side navigation bar lets users switch easily between the new homepage and Timeline for a complete view of their digital activity.
When Will These Features Be Available?
Currently, these improvements are rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel, meaning they’re still in the testing phase. Microsoft hasn’t provided a specific rollout date, but if feedback remains positive, these features are expected to reach all Windows 11 users in a future update. Whether you're a productivity enthusiast or a casual user, Windows 11 indicator customization and the updated Recall experience make Windows feel more personalized and intuitive.
