Why Tumblr WordPress Integration Is on Hold
Automattic's much-anticipated Tumblr WordPress integration has officially been paused, according to CEO Matt Mullenweg. Originally planned to unify Tumblr’s vast blogging network—over 500 million blogs—with WordPress infrastructure, the transition was meant to streamline content sharing and make ActivityPub support more seamless. However, Mullenweg revealed on a recent Decoder podcast episode that the company is now prioritizing user-requested improvements over backend restructuring. While the migration is not canceled entirely, it's no longer an active development priority.
Fediverse Support Delayed Alongside Tumblr WordPress Integration
Part of the excitement surrounding the Tumblr WordPress integration was its potential to bring Tumblr posts into the fediverse—a decentralized network of platforms like Mastodon—via WordPress's existing ActivityPub plugin. By migrating Tumblr to WordPress, Automattic could have offered an effortless gateway to federated social media. Mullenweg acknowledged this was a major reason for the plan, stating it would’ve been “a free way to get it.” However, with the integration on pause, full fediverse compatibility will have to wait unless Tumblr adds support directly to its current platform.
Why Automattic Is Shifting Priorities
Instead of focusing on large-scale backend changes, Automattic is now turning its attention to the features Tumblr users actively ask for. Mullenweg emphasized the need to improve visible, user-centric elements rather than pushing ahead with behind-the-scenes infrastructure overhauls. This shift reflects a broader 2025 trend in product development: focusing on user experience and feedback loops to guide feature rollouts, even at the expense of longer-term technical roadmaps like the Tumblr WordPress integration.
Will Tumblr Still Join the Fediverse in the Future?
Although the integration is paused, Mullenweg hasn’t ruled out fediverse support for Tumblr entirely. If demand grows, he suggests Automattic might implement ActivityPub directly on the existing Tumblr codebase instead of waiting for a full migration. Since acquiring Tumblr from Verizon in 2019, Automattic has experimented with modernization and open web features, and federated posting could still be on the roadmap—just through a different technical path. For now, Tumblr fans will need to wait a bit longer for those cross-platform sharing features to materialize.
