Threads Word Filter Now Smarter and More Flexible
Threads has officially upgraded its moderation tools by rolling out a more powerful Threads word filter system—now separate from Instagram’s settings. With this new update, users can mute specific words, phrases, and emojis directly on Threads, without affecting their Instagram experience. The biggest highlight? You can now set custom time limits for muted content, making this feature ideal for avoiding spoilers or temporary online drama. Meta is positioning Threads as a space for open conversation, but this new tool empowers users to make that conversation feel safer and more personalized.
Customize Your Threads Word Filter Experience
Previously, the Threads word filter was tied to your Instagram preferences—any muted words would be applied across both platforms. Now, Threads users have the ability to curate entirely separate word filters. This includes custom lists for phrases or emojis you want to block, as well as control over where filters apply: your feed, search, profiles, and replies. According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, this update is designed to make Threads a place where users feel free to express themselves while keeping unwanted content at bay.
Set Temporary Mutes with Time Limits
One of the standout features in the new Threads word filter is the option to snooze specific words temporarily—up to 30 days. That means if you want to avoid spoilers from a new show or silence a trending controversy, you can do so without committing to a permanent mute. Threads even shows a countdown of how many days remain until the word returns to your feed. Unlike Instagram, which lacks this time-limited mute feature, Threads now joins platforms like X (formerly Twitter) that offer similar flexibility.
Rollout May Take Time for All Users
While the new Threads word filter feature is already being rolled out, some users might not see it just yet. Meta notes the rollout may be gradual. Still, this update signals a clear move to give Threads users more direct control over their social media experience. As Meta continues to differentiate Threads from Instagram, expect even more personalized tools focused on privacy, comfort, and community control.
