Snapchat has launched a new feature called Now Playing, allowing users to share the music they are listening to in real time directly on Snap Map. This exclusive integration, starting with Spotify, lets you link your streaming service account and display your current track to friends while also discovering what songs they are enjoying.
When you activate Now Playing, your listening activity appears on Snap Map as a real-time update. Friends can see the song, artist, and album art you are currently playing. The feature also integrates with Spotlight videos, Snapchat's short-form video platform, enabling you to save any song you discover in a Spotlight video directly to Spotify or visit the track's page on the platform.
Snapchat offers robust privacy options for Now Playing. Users can choose who sees their listening activity—whether everyone, friends only, or a custom list. The feature does not display your last-played song or listening history. Sharing remains active as long as you have opened Snapchat within the past 24 hours. If inactive for more than 24 hours, sharing pauses automatically and resumes only when you reopen the app. You can also manually pause sharing for 3 hours, 24 hours, or indefinitely.
Snapchat joins a growing trend of social media platforms embracing music sharing. TikTok allows users to share songs from streaming services and save tracks they encounter in viral videos. Instagram lets users share what they are listening to through Notes—short status updates in the DM inbox. Even Spotify itself has launched a feature for real-time music sharing with friends.
According to Manny Adler, Snapchat’s head of music, “Music is one of the most personal ways people express themselves, and it becomes even more meaningful when it brings friends closer. Now Playing adds a new layer of expression and discovery to Snap Map, helping Snapchatters share the soundtrack to their day and find new music through the people they already know.”
Since its launch in 2017, Snap Map has grown from a simple location-sharing tool with over 450 million monthly users to a feature-rich platform. It now includes local hotspots, activities, and music discovery. The Now Playing integration further transforms Snap Map into a social music hub.
Now Playing is rolling out to users in regions where both Spotify and Snapchat are available. Canada is slated for a coming-soon release. No specific city or country is mentioned, making the feature global in scope.
