Google has officially confirmed that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will no longer receive software updates after this fall. This means the Tensor-based Pixel 6 series—the first to feature Google’s own chip—will stop getting new Android versions and monthly security patches by October 2026.
The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro launched in October 2021. Google originally promised three years of OS updates and five years of security patches. That support window ends this fall, with Android 17 QPR1 being the final update series for both phones.
After these updates, Google will stop sending any new Android versions, bug fixes, or security patches to the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.
Your Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro won’t become useless. Apps will continue to work, and the phone will function normally. However, without new security updates, your device becomes more vulnerable to malware and cyber threats over time. For users who prioritize security, it’s time to plan an upgrade.
The Tensor chipset in the Pixel 6 series was a first-generation design. While still capable, Google likely wants to focus its engineering resources on newer Tensor processors. The company also moved the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 to a quarterly update track earlier this year, signaling that the end was near.
