Leica’s new M camera drops its iconic rangefinder for an EVF, marking a bold shift in the brand’s legendary design. The Leica M EV1 replaces the traditional mechanical rangefinder with a 5.76-million dot electronic viewfinder, offering photographers a modern shooting experience while keeping the classic M-series aesthetic. Pricing starts at nearly $9,000 in the US, making it a premium choice for enthusiasts and professionals alike.
The M EV1 builds on the M11-P introduced in 2023 but removes the rangefinder entirely. This change means no front window for the viewfinder, giving the camera a sleek, minimalist look. The switch to an EVF makes composing shots more versatile, especially in challenging lighting conditions.
Despite dropping the rangefinder, Leica kept the powerful internals intact. The M EV1 features a 60-megapixel full-frame sensor, Leica’s top-notch processor, and 64GB of internal storage. Content Credentials support ensures your work remains securely tied to you, though video recording is still not supported.
With the mechanical rangefinder gone, the M EV1 sheds some weight. Constructed with aluminum like the black M11, the camera weighs just 484 grams (1.07 pounds) without a lens — roughly the weight of a single golf ball. It’s compact and sturdy, perfect for photographers who want a premium feel without bulk.
The Leica M EV1 launches today in Europe for €7,950, with a US release expected later due to FCC approval. When it arrives stateside, the price is projected to be $8,995. While pricey, the camera offers a modernized Leica experience with the convenience of an electronic viewfinder.
