Kenya is taking a bold step to strengthen its healthcare system by equipping community health workers with artificial intelligence (AI) tools. The move addresses long-standing challenges in primary healthcare, such as slow data reporting, workforce shortages, and decision-making delays at household level. By integrating AI into everyday care, the Ministry of Health aims to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and reach of health services across all 47 counties. The Ministry of Health has partnered with Barcelona-based Causal Foundry to deploy AI-driven decision support tools across Kenya’s community health system. With more than 100,000 Community Health Promoters active nationwide, the programme focuses on equipping these frontline workers with algorithms that assist in data collection, clinical triage, and service delivery. AI will help health workers prioritize interventions, detect high-risk cases earlier, and streamline reporting, reducing delays that often hamper effective public health response.
This AI initiative is closely tied to the draft Kenya National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2025–2030. Causal Foundry’s involvement in Kenya’s AI programme is supported by the Gates Foundation, signaling international confidence in the country’s approach.
