Google Tests Real-Time AI Voice Search in AI Mode
Real-time AI voice search is now being tested by Google through a new feature called Search Live, giving users a more natural way to interact with the search engine. Instead of typing queries, users can speak directly to a Gemini-powered chatbot and receive voice responses — all within the Google app. Currently rolling out to Google Labs users in the U.S., this conversational voice feature marks a big leap in AI search functionality. Whether you're asking about travel tips, recipes, or random facts, this update enhances how users search and engage online with AI.
Search Live brings real-time conversations to AI Mode
Search Live is tightly integrated with AI Mode, Google’s evolving AI-powered search experience. By tapping the sparkle icon in the Google app, users can launch a live voice session with Gemini, Google’s AI assistant. You simply speak your question, and Gemini responds with audio, relevant links, and even follow-up prompts — creating a podcast-like search journey. Though camera-sharing isn’t supported yet, Google plans to add it soon, further blending voice, visual, and search features in a seamless experience.
How Search Live works and what makes it different
What sets Search Live apart is its multitasking ability. The feature keeps running in the background, so you can continue conversations with Gemini while using other apps. There’s even a transcript button if you prefer reading instead of listening. You can respond by voice or by typing — giving users flexibility in how they communicate. Plus, all your past chats are saved in your AI Mode history, making it easy to revisit information. It's currently limited to the Google app on Android and iOS, but its design suggests a more robust rollout in the near future.
AI voice search is the new frontier for tech giants
Google isn’t alone in pursuing real-time AI voice search. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has its Advanced Voice Mode, and Anthropic recently added voice to Claude. Apple is also building an AI-enhanced Siri, though its rollout has been delayed due to technical reliability concerns. What makes Google’s approach compelling is how tightly it's integrated into search — turning questions into conversations and transforming the way we use our phones for information. This move solidifies voice-powered AI as a major part of the future search experience.
