Google Search Gets Biggest Changes Ever at I/O 2026

Google Search Redefined: AI Overviews and AI Mode Unite
Google Search is entering its next major evolution. At Google I/O 2026, the company revealed a reimagined search bar designed to make AI Overviews and AI Mode more seamless than ever. Powered by the new Gemini 3.5 Flash model, this update transforms how users interact with search results.
What’s New in the Search Bar?
The updated search box expands for longer queries and features AI-powered autocomplete to help build on your questions. According to Robby Stein, Google’s vice president of product for Search, users will “reliably” see AI Overviews when asking natural-language questions. Follow-up queries in AI Overviews now redirect to AI Mode, where you can attach documents, photos, videos, and Chrome tabs directly to the search box.
Seamless Transition Between Modes
Liz Reid, Google’s vice president of Search, emphasized eliminating “friction” between AI Overviews and AI Mode. “We really work to make that much more seamless and simplified,” Reid said. The updated search bar rolls out globally on desktop and mobile starting May 19, 2026. Users can still access traditional results by selecting the “Web” tab.
AI Agents: Google Does the Searching for You
Google is moving toward a future where it searches on your behalf. This summer, AI information agents will launch for AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers. These agents monitor topics when you’re offline, such as tracking tour dates for your favorite band. “You could be asleep, and it’s researching, finding information, doing tasks for you,” Stein said.
Personal Intelligence Integration
These agents connect to your Google accounts using Personal Intelligence, pulling data from apps like Gmail to personalize responses. Updates include text, links, and videos, similar to AI Mode responses. Google is also expanding its AI-powered booking feature to schedule local experiences and call businesses like pet groomers or home repair services.
Generative UI: Build Custom Widgets and Apps in Search
Google Search is becoming a platform for creation. A new generative UI feature, arriving in the coming months, lets users build custom widgets and apps directly in the search engine. AI Overviews can now code interactive visualizations, such as diagrams explaining black holes.
Super Apps for Subscribers
AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers can create “super apps” in Search. For example, ask Search to build a home fitness tracker that connects to real-time weather and calendar data. Google’s AI generates an app you can revisit and share. “This is really the next generation of what it means to be Search,” Stein said.
