DoorDash will use Waymo’s robotaxis for delivery in Phoenix, bringing self-driving cars to your doorstep — or rather, to the curb. The new partnership merges DoorDash’s food delivery power with Waymo’s autonomous driving tech, marking a major leap for both companies in the race toward driverless delivery.
DoorDash and Waymo announced that driverless Jaguar I-Pace SUVs will soon begin handling food deliveries in Phoenix. This collaboration will integrate Waymo’s fully autonomous robotaxis into the DoorDash delivery fleet, letting select customers experience AI-powered deliveries for the first time.
The move positions Phoenix — already a hotbed for self-driving experiments — as the testing ground for a new era of delivery logistics. It’s also a glimpse of how automation could soon transform the gig economy.
The partnership comes as DoorDash seeks to reduce costs tied to its human delivery workforce. By using robotaxis, the company can expand delivery hours, improve efficiency, and potentially lower costs for customers.
DoorDash has already been experimenting with different forms of automation. Its sidewalk robot, Dot, is currently part of a pilot program in Phoenix, while partnerships with Serve Robotics in Los Angeles aim to make short-distance deliveries even faster.
Unlike sidewalk delivery bots, Waymo’s robotaxis operate on public roads, allowing them to complete deliveries over longer distances and at higher speeds. Customers, however, will still need to meet the car at the curb and retrieve their orders from the vehicle’s trunk.
This small trade-off may be worth it — Waymo’s vehicles are built to navigate city traffic safely and efficiently, and with AI constantly learning from every drive, the process is expected to get even smoother over time.
Phoenix is quickly becoming a hub for autonomous delivery technology, with DoorDash and Waymo leading the charge. Uber Eats, Amazon, and others are also experimenting with self-driving delivery systems, but Waymo’s road-ready fleet gives it a unique advantage.
For DoorDash, this could be the beginning of a broader rollout of autonomous deliveries across U.S. cities — blending convenience, innovation, and cost savings.
As AI and robotics continue to evolve, the question isn’t whether your next delivery will come from a robot — but how soon it’ll pull up outside your home.
