Google is rolling out a smart new update to make browsing less irritating. Starting soon, Chrome will automatically disable web notifications you don’t care about — those constant pop-ups from websites you’ve ignored for months. This feature will be available on both Android and desktop, aiming to declutter your online experience and make notifications actually useful again.
A Smarter Way To Handle Notification Overload
The new update builds on Chrome’s existing Safety Check tools, which already help users manage camera access and location permissions. Now, Chrome is extending that intelligence to notifications, automatically turning them off for websites you rarely interact with.
This change mirrors a similar feature in Android that lets users quickly unsubscribe from unwanted site alerts. Importantly, the auto-disable system won’t affect web apps you’ve installed — it only targets websites that flood your browser with ignored notifications.
Why Google Is Doing This
According to Google, fewer than 1% of all Chrome notifications receive any user interaction. That means most of them are just digital noise. With this update, Chrome aims to cut through that clutter and improve user focus without you needing to lift a finger.
Data-Driven And User-Friendly
Google says early testing of the feature showed a major drop in “notification overload,” with little impact on overall engagement. In fact, sites that send fewer, more relevant notifications are actually seeing higher click-through rates — proving that quality beats quantity even in browser alerts.
“Our experiments indicate that reducing spammy notifications helps users notice the ones that truly matter,” Google explained in its announcement.
When To Expect It
The feature is expected to roll out gradually over the coming weeks across Android and desktop versions of Chrome. Once available, it will automatically analyze your notification behavior and disable permissions for ignored sites — no setup required.
