ChatGPT on Mac Can Now Read and Send iMessages

ChatGPT for Mac Integrates with iMessage

OpenAI has announced that ChatGPT on Mac can now read and send iMessages directly. This integration is available in the ChatGPT desktop app for Mac, allowing the AI assistant to interact with your Messages conversations without switching apps. The feature is designed to let you ask ChatGPT to draft replies, summarize threads, or even send messages on your behalf—all while staying within the chat interface.

Unlike the earlier version of the Mac app, which could only read text from other apps, this update enables two-way communication with iMessage. That means ChatGPT can not only see what you’ve received but also compose and deliver outgoing messages. The capability is part of OpenAI’s broader effort to make ChatGPT a more practical everyday tool on macOS.

To use it, you’ll need the latest version of the desktop app and to grant explicit permission for ChatGPT to access your Messages data. The integration is opt-in, so you control when and how the AI interacts with your conversations.

How to Enable the iMessage Integration

To use the feature, you must first enable the iMessage integration in ChatGPT’s settings. This is not a default setting, so you will need to manually turn it on before the app can interact with your messages.

Once you open the ChatGPT app on your Mac, navigate to the settings menu. Look for the dedicated iMessage integration option and toggle it on. The app will then require permission to access your Messages. You must grant this access through the system prompt that appears, allowing ChatGPT to read and process your conversations.

After granting permission, the integration is active. The setup is straightforward, but it is a required step—without enabling it and giving the app access, ChatGPT will have no way to view or assist with your iMessage content.

What ChatGPT Can Do with Your Messages

Once you enable the integration, ChatGPT can read your conversations to provide context-aware replies. This means it understands the ongoing thread and can draft messages that fit naturally into the discussion. You can also have it send those messages directly on your behalf, saving you the effort of copying and pasting.

Beyond drafting, ChatGPT can summarize threads—especially useful for long group chats or busy work conversations. It can quickly pull out the key points so you don’t have to scroll through everything. Additionally, it can suggest responses when you’re unsure how to reply, offering options that match the tone and content of the conversation.

Privacy and Limitations

OpenAI has clarified how your data is handled when using the ChatGPT for Mac iMessage integration. According to the company, message data is used to improve the model, but it is not stored by default. This means that while your conversations may inform future AI training, they won’t be kept in a retrievable archive unless you choose to enable storage.

However, there are important limitations to keep in mind. The feature works only with the iMessage app; it does not integrate with other messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Slack, or Telegram. You will need to stick to Apple’s native messaging service to use ChatGPT’s assistance directly within a chat.

If you ever feel uncomfortable with the integration, you can disable it at any time. The toggle is found in the ChatGPT settings on your Mac, allowing you to revoke access instantly. This gives you control over when and how ChatGPT interacts with your messages, ensuring that privacy remains a user-driven choice.
