Retro gaming fans finally have something to get excited about: Ayaneo has revealed its first Android phone, the Pocket Play. Teased since August, the device draws heavy inspiration from the 2011 Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, bringing back the sliding phone design with built-in gaming controls. While fans eagerly anticipate specs and pricing, the design alone is already sparking buzz online.
The standout feature of the Pocket Play is its sliding display, which reveals a full set of physical gaming controls. This includes a traditional D-pad, ABXY face buttons, two circular touch pads, and dual sets of shoulder buttons on the back. Interestingly, Ayaneo has opted not to include a 3.5mm headphone jack, a nod to modern smartphone trends. Even closed, the device maintains a sleek, phone-like appearance with subtle hints of its gaming DNA.
Despite the reveal, Ayaneo has kept key specifications under wraps. The Pocket Play is only confirmed to launch “soon,” and its Kickstarter page offers no further details. Gamers and tech enthusiasts are left speculating about performance, battery life, and whether the phone can handle demanding Android games or serve as a daily smartphone replacement.
The Pocket Play isn’t the only Xperia Play homage in 2025. Earlier this year, Anbernic released the RG Slide, another slider-focused Android gaming device. Comparatively, the Pocket Play appears sleeker and more versatile, potentially justifying a higher price point. While the RG Slide retails for $189, Ayaneo’s premium design hints at a significantly steeper cost.
From a design perspective, the Pocket Play manages to balance nostalgia with modern functionality. Its front and back panels resemble a regular smartphone, ensuring everyday usability, while the slide-out controls cater to gamers craving tactile input. This dual-purpose design could appeal to a broader audience than retro gaming enthusiasts alone.
Social media reactions suggest excitement and curiosity in equal measure. Fans are comparing render images, speculating on potential hardware, and debating whether this device could replace traditional phones for some users. Ayaneo’s approach emphasizes both aesthetics and playability, aiming to carve a niche in a crowded mobile gaming market.
The Pocket Play signals a possible resurgence of hybrid gaming smartphones. As companies explore retro-inspired designs, the line between phone and portable console continues to blur. Ayaneo’s entry could set a trend, encouraging other manufacturers to combine nostalgia, utility, and mobile gaming in new and unexpected ways.
