Apple’s AI-Powered Accessibility Features for 2026
Apple has announced a major update to its accessibility features across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Vision Pro, leveraging on-device AI processing to enhance the user experience. The new tools include AI-generated subtitling for any video, improved VoiceOver image descriptions, and natural language navigation in Voice Control. These updates are set to roll out later this year, making Apple devices more inclusive than ever.
AI-Generated Live Captions for Any Video
One of the standout features is on-device speech recognition that generates captions for uncaptioned videos. This works on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Vision Pro, allowing users to follow along with any video content without missing a word. The processing happens entirely on-device, ensuring privacy and speed.
How It Works
- Real-time speech recognition converts audio to text instantly.
- Works with streaming services, social media videos, and personal recordings.
- No internet connection required after initial setup.
Enhanced VoiceOver and Magnifier with AI
Apple’s VoiceOver screen reader now includes Image Explorer, which uses AI to provide detailed descriptions of images. Users are warned not to rely on these descriptions in hazardous situations. The Magnifier app gains the ability to answer questions about what the camera sees via the Action button, making everyday tasks easier for visually impaired users.
Key Improvements
- Voice Control now supports natural language navigation, allowing users to say commands like “open Mail” or “scroll down.”
- Accessibility Reader can summarize complex documents, articles, and web pages.
- All AI processing is done on-device for privacy and low latency.
Vision Pro Accessibility Upgrades
Apple Vision Pro receives significant accessibility updates, including integration with power wheelchair drive systems. The eye-tracking system can now control Tolt and LUCI wheelchairs via Bluetooth or hardwired connection with the Developer Strap. Additionally, Vehicle Motion Cues help reduce motion sickness for users wearing the headset in moving vehicles.
Other Vision Pro Features
- Support for larger text on tvOS.
- New API for sign language interpreters in FaceTime calls.
- Improved eye-tracking calibration for users with limited mobility.
Non-AI Updates: Hikawa Grip & Stand
Apple is also releasing the MagSafe-compatible Hikawa Grip & Stand for iPhone, available worldwide in three colors starting today. This accessory provides a secure grip and stand functionality, designed for users with dexterity challenges.
