Abu Dhabi-based start-up LODD Autonomous has developed an unmanned cargo aircraft, ‘Hili’, designed for “middle mile” delivery between regional logistics hubs without the need for airports or onboard pilots.

The aircraft can carry hundreds of kilograms over long distances and takes off and lands vertically, allowing it to operate near warehouses or distribution centres.

Using a hybrid propulsion system, it recharges its batteries mid-flight, eliminating downtime.

LODD has signed agreements to produce over 200 aircraft for major operators, including Emirates and Etihad Cargo. Experimental operations are expected this year, with full certification targeted later.
