Can we talk about the sudden obsession with 2-minute intro videos in job applications?

After 45 minutes of filling out forms.
After re-entering my resume line by line.
After answering questions you already have the answers to.

You sneak in a video request at the very end.

Not everyone is camera-ready mid-application. Not everyone wants to perform for a role they haven’t even spoken to a human about yet.

If this were the 1980s, the equivalent would be asking candidates to mail a VHS tape of themselves. That would’ve been absurd then — and honestly, it still is.

If you want to see how someone communicates, interview them.
If you want to understand their experience, read the resume (or yes, use one of the many tools that already exist to help with that).

Applications are already long. Let’s not turn every role into a casting call. 💌  less

    ✔ Qualified

    ✔ Likeable

    …and still get rejected.

Not because you’re not good enough - but because someone else fit one tiny thing better.

Here’s what most candidates don’t realise:
    ❌ Rejection isn’t a verdict.
    ❌ Silence isn’t personal.
    ❌ A “no” today isn’t a “no” forever.

As a recruiter, I see incredible people miss roles every week - not for lack of talent, but because timing, structure, culture, and budgets change fast.

So if you’re applying right now:
    👉 Don’t stop showing up.
👉 Don’t attach your worth to one interview.
👉 Don’t ghost yourself before others do.

If this helped, share it with someone who’s job hunting ❤️  less

Just imagine being unemployed, going through interviews, and then hearing… nothing.

🚫 No update. No closure. Just silence.

Having worked closely with founders, CEOs, and decision-makers, I know this: in most cases, a hiring decision is formed quickly after an interview. Whether it’s a yes or a no, there’s usually clarity early on.

That’s why, if you’re at the stage of interviewing candidates, a simple follow-up is not optional—it’s basic professional courtesy.

Even when there are internal delays or decision bottlenecks, responding when a candidate follows up matters. Ghosting leaves people anxious, frustrated, and feeling disregarded.

Candidates invest time, effort, and hope into every interview.
    Respect their time.
    Respect their effort.
    Respect their journey.

Because ghosting doesn’t just hurt candidates—it quietly damages your employer brand too.

    Being Ghosted After an Interview

    You prepare.
    You research the company.
    You show up early.
    You answer thoughtfully.
    You follow up.
    And then… silence.
Being ghosted after an interview isn’t just disappointing — it’s draining. You’re left refreshing your inbox, replaying answers in your head, wondering if you did something wrong.

Most candidates don’t expect an offer.
    But we do expect closure.
A simple “we’ve decided to move forward with another candidate” does more than reject us — it allows us to move on with clarity and dignity.

    When companies ghost:
    Trust erodes
    Employer brands suffer
    Candidates feel disposable
Interviews are human interactions, not one-sided evaluations. Behind every resume is a person juggling hope, bills, time, and self-doubt.

If you interview someone, please close the loop.
    Silence isn’t neutral — it’s a message.

To Every Fresh Graduate Who Is Losing Hope

If you've applied to dozens of jobs If your CV has gone unnoticed If your phone hasn't rung for interviews If rejection emails-or silence-have become routine

    This post is for you.

Not getting interview calls does not mean you are incompetent.

It does not mean your degree is useless.

And it certainly does not define your future.

    The truth is:

    The job market is crowded

Companies often look for "experience" over potential

Many good candidates are filtered out before a human even sees their CV

But your journey is not over. It is just beginning.

Every successful professional you admire once faced uncertainty, rejection, and self-doubt.

The difference is - they did not stop preparing while waiting.

    Use this phase to:

    Upgrade your skills

Improve your CV and LinkedIn profile

    Learn how interviews actually work

Network, even when it feels uncomfortable

Believe in your value, even when others haven't recognized it yet

    Remember:

    One interview can change everything

One "yes" can erase hundreds of rejections

Your timing is different - not wrong

To every fresh graduate reading this: You are capable. You are qualified. You are needed.  less

Being unemployed is one of the hardest full-time jobs no one talks about.

You wake up every day with the same question:
“Will today finally be the day?”

You send out 50 applications, knowing most will disappear into the void.
You battle imposter syndrome at 9 AM, rejection at 2 PM, and silence by 6 PM.

And on top of that, you deal with:
    — Fake job postings
    — Ghosting
    — “Entry-level” roles asking for 10 years of experience at beginner pay

    Unemployment isn’t a break.
It’s a battlefield—no map, no timeline, no guarantees.

The least we can do is be human.

If someone asks for help—offer it.
If they need a referral—give it.
    If they’re confused—guide them.

A small gesture can change someone’s entire career trajectory.

And one day, it might be us on the other side of the screen, hoping someone cares enough to help. 🤍

If you get nervous during interviews, here’s a hack that worked for me (and helped me land offers from Meta, Salesforce, and Google)

Before each interview, I used to create a little cheat sheet that contained 5-6 stories I could speak to in my interview.

I liked this number because it offered a range of responses without being too difficult to remember and keep straight during my interviews.

Before my interviews started, I would go over these examples in my head over and over.

Having stories ready to go that I could pull from always helped me feel more prepared and confident than trying to think of answers on the spot.

A few tips that worked for me:

    - To understand what stories to even use, I would read the job description and come up with an example for each bullet point or minimum qualification listed.

    - For in person interviews, I would save my answers on my phone and review them one last time while waiting in the lobby, which helped me feel prepared.

    - For virtual interviews, I would write out my main topics on a sticky note that I stuck to the side of my laptop. If I froze in the middle of an answer, I would glance over at my prompts to help me get back on track.

    - I would recite my answers out loud. It can feel awkward at first but hearing yourself speak out loud can really help you refine your responses.

What strategies do you use to ease your nerves and prepare before an interview?

    -

Companies need to recognize that they are overcomplicating the process. No one wants to spend 30 minutes filling out forms to repeat information already included in their resume.

Adding unnecessary steps only wastes time and demonstrates a lack of efficiency.

To filter out unsuitable candidates, simply review the CV submitted.

Making the process more difficult does not attract better candidates; it only discourages them.  less

The job application grind is exhausting.

You've sent 50 applications this month.
Maybe 5 responses. One interview. Zero offers.

Each application feels like shouting into the void.

    Tailoring resumes at midnight.

Writing cover letters that sound enthusiastic when you're running on fumes.

Refreshing your email every 20 minutes.

The rejection emails hurt. The silence hurts more.

Here's what I wish someone told me earlier:

Your worth isn't measured by response rates.

The system is broken, not you.

    Companies are overwhelmed.

    ATS systems are brutal.

Sometimes great candidates get lost in the noise.

    What helps:

Apply to fewer jobs, but better fits

Build connections before you need them

    Take actual breaks

Remember the "no" you got yesterday has zero impact on tomorrow's "yes"

To everyone in the thick of it right now: I see you. This part is hard. You're not alone.

What's one thing that's helped you stay sane during your job search?
