Hekima University College was established in 1984 by the Major Superiors of the Society of Jesus in Africa and Madagascar as a school of theology. Its founding purpose was to give Jesuit students preparing for priesthood a first theological formation at university level. The undergraduate theology programme trains students from about fourteen local and international religious congregations, while the graduate Peace Studies and International Relations programme attracts students from various backgrounds and nationalities. In response to Africa’s serious need for peace and international cooperation, the college created its Institute of Peace Studies and International Relations in 2004. The institute began offering a Master’s degree in Peace Studies and International Relations and was accredited by the Commission for University Education in the 2007/2008 academic year. The theology programme forms students in contextualized theology and prepares them to transform the contemporary context of church and society. In a similar way, the Peace Studies and International Relations programme seeks to educate and form women and men with the skills and competence needed for conflict transformation and peace building.
