Role Overview
This academic post sits within a university department where the successful candidate will take ownership of teaching, assessment, and curriculum development across mathematics and related subjects. Beyond classroom delivery, the role is expected to contribute to the department's research profile and to support the wider academic community through mentorship, collaboration, and scholarly output. The work matters because it shapes the quality of student learning, sustains the department’s academic standards, and advances the institution’s standing in research and teaching.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver lectures, seminars, and practical sessions in allocated subject areas, ensuring content is current, accurate, and aligned with departmental quality standards.
- Design and develop course materials, assessments, and full programmes of study, including new modules at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
- Review and update existing course content regularly, responding to student feedback, disciplinary developments, and accreditation requirements.
- Collaborate with academic colleagues on curriculum planning, module revisions, and the integration of research findings into teaching.
- Conduct independent and collaborative research, preparing grant proposals, publishing findings, and presenting work at conferences and other scholarly events.
- Engage in consultancy work and applied projects where relevant, building links with external organisations and professional bodies.
- Provide academic guidance and mentoring to students, supporting their progression, pastoral wellbeing, and career preparation.
- Undertake administrative duties assigned by the Head of Department, including committee participation and quality assurance activities.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor of Education with a Mathematics teaching subject combination (e.g., Mathematics & Geography, or Mathematics & Business Studies) from a recognised university.
- Master of Science (Mathematics) or Master of Arts (Mathematics) from an accredited institution, with strong subject knowledge across core mathematical areas.
- Active enrolment in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or equivalent doctoral programme, with evidence of progression and a clear research agenda.
- Registration or eligibility for registration with the relevant professional body in the education or mathematics field.
- At least three years of post-qualification work experience, ideally within a higher education teaching environment.
- Demonstrated experience teaching at university level, including designing assessments, delivering lectures, and supervising student work.
- A solid record of research activity, including publications, conference presentations, or active work on grant applications.
- Evidence of dedication to high-quality teaching, student engagement, and a positive, inclusive learning environment.
