Role Overview
As a Plantations Management Trainee, you will work directly alongside senior estate managers to oversee day-to-day field operations, from planting schedules to harvest logistics. Your consistent presence on the estate ensures that work teams stay on track, crop health is monitored, and productivity targets are met — critical to the employer’s goal of maintaining high yield while controlling operational costs.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise field labour teams during daily cultivation, fertilisation, pruning, and harvesting activities, ensuring work is completed safely and to quality standards.
- Monitor crop health and pest or disease outbreaks, reporting findings to the estate manager and coordinating timely interventions.
- Assist in planning and executing replanting programmes, including land preparation, nursery management, and young plant care.
- Record and maintain accurate field data: production volumes, labour attendance, input usage, and weather observations.
- Conduct regular inspections of drainage, irrigation, and road infrastructure, flagging maintenance needs promptly.
- Coordinate with storekeepers and supply chain teams to ensure fertilisers, agrochemicals, and tools are available when needed.
- Lead toolbox talks and safety briefings for workers, reinforcing correct handling of equipment and chemicals.
- Prepare weekly and monthly operational reports for management review, highlighting variances from targets.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Degree in Agriculture, Plantation Management, or a related field preferred; Advanced Level (A/L) pass combined with a NIPM Plantations Management Course is a strong advantage.
- 0–2 years of supervisory or field experience in plantations or large-scale agriculture is beneficial but not required for motivated candidates.
- Demonstrated leadership potential — able to direct and motivate diverse teams in a physically demanding outdoor environment.
- Excellent command of spoken and written English for report writing and communication with senior management.
- Strong problem-solving abilities, high attention to detail, and effective team coordination skills.
- Ability to communicate in Sinhala and/or Tamil is a distinct advantage for daily interaction with field workers and local community.
- Willingness to reside on the estate or within close commuting distance and to work flexible hours during peak seasons.
