Job Description

The world needs more Intrepid people:

Do you dream of being part of unforgettable travel experiences across East Africa - bringing adventure to life by safely transporting travellers, supporting seamless tour operations, and being a welcoming presence on the road? As a Tour Truck Driver with Intrepid, you’ll play a vital role in making every journey smooth, safe, and truly memorable.

Every day will be different, but every day you will:

  • Ensure the safe, reliable and professional driving of our overland tour trucks as you navigate diverse routes across East Africa
  • Support tour leaders with essential logistics such as loading and unloading equipment, organising supplies, and helping create efficient travel days
  • Maintain the vehicle to a high standard - keeping it clean, fueled, well-organised and mechanically sound
  • Be the calm, capable first point of call when challenges arise, using your driving expertise and practical problem-solving skills
  • Provide friendly, respectful and engaging interactions with travellers, helping cultivate a positive group experience
  • Uphold Intrepid’s safety policies and responsible travel ethos throughout every journey

To be considered you must have:

  • A valid commercial driver’s licence and a clean driving record
  • Proven experience driving heavy vehicles, ideally across East Africa
  • Basic mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot issues on the road
  • Strong communication skills and a customer-first mindset
  • Willingness to work long hours, weekends, and travel extensively across multiple regions
  • Familiarity with East African roads, border crossings, and terrain (advantageous)

Desirable:

  • A passion for travel and commitment to Intrepid’s responsible travel philosophy
  • Alignment with Intrepid’s values: Real, Impactful, Ambitious, Together
  • A digital mindset and comfort with basic tech tools
  • Driver-guide qualifications (advantageous but not essential)

What you need to know:

  • This is a freelance agreement role, offering flexibility, but it requires strong availability during peak travel seasons
  • Recruitment is underway now, with onboarding and training taking place ahead of the coming travel season
  • The role is physically and mentally demanding - involving long driving days, outdoor activity, and consistent engagement with travellers
  • You’ll spend significant time away from home, with some trips running for several weeks at a time
  • You’ll be driving across multiple East African regions, playing a key part in bringing our overland adventures to life
