Supermarket Deli Chef

Role Overview

Prepare and serve ready-to-eat food in a busy supermarket deli, from cooking and assembling dishes to keeping the service counter stocked and appealing. The role helps customers find fresh, well-presented food while supporting safe kitchen practices, consistent portions, and careful use of ingredients.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare meals, snacks, pastries, and side dishes according to established recipes and quality standards.
• Present food neatly in heated counters and display cases, replenishing items as customer demand changes.
• Plan preparation quantities around likely sales to keep popular items available without producing unnecessary surplus.
• Follow safe food-handling procedures, including temperature checks, accurate labelling, and measures to prevent cross-contamination.
• Clean and sanitize worktops, utensils, cookware, and equipment during service and at the end of shifts.
• Monitor ingredient stocks, rotate supplies using FIFO, and alert the manager when items are running low.
• Check ingredients and prepared food for freshness and quality, and report or remove anything that does not meet standards.
• Serve shoppers courteously, answer questions about menu items, and coordinate with store colleagues during busy periods.

Requirements & Qualifications

• At least one year of hands-on cooking experience in a commercial kitchen, restaurant, catering operation, or supermarket deli.
• Practical knowledge of kitchen hygiene, food storage temperatures, sanitation, and common food-safety risks.
• A certificate or diploma in food production, culinary arts, catering, or hospitality is an advantage.
• Ability to prepare several items efficiently while maintaining recipe consistency, portion accuracy, and an attractive presentation.
• Reliable, punctual, and able to work cooperatively with colleagues on rotating shifts.
