Role Overview
This part-time senior post leads the technical and delivery side of major building and civil construction work, with day-to-day decisions made on site. The engineer-manager checks that approved structural and civil designs are buildable, safe and properly co-ordinated, then keeps contractors, consultants and suppliers aligned with the employer's programme and cost targets. Their judgement directly protects foundation performance, structural integrity and regulatory compliance on projects where structural performance and compliance are critical.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct the planning, phasing and completion of large building, civil and structural packages from pre-construction through to handover.
- Scrutinise structural, architectural, civil and MEP drawings for buildability, clash avoidance and alignment with approved engineering standards before work starts.
- Oversee specialised structural operations, including deep foundations, bored or driven piling, reinforced concrete, steel frame erection and masonry.
- Establish quality-control routines, carry out site inspections and resolve complex technical problems that emerge during construction.
- Co-ordinate main contractors, subcontractors, consultants, material suppliers and site technical crews to maintain output, workmanship and programme discipline.
- Chair progress meetings, review contractor material submittals and method statements, and arrange testing, commissioning and final handover activities.
- Track cost variations, quantity surveying records, procurement schedules and project cash flow, while enforcing Kenyan building regulations, NEMA environmental requirements and OSHA safety rules.
- Maintain project risk registers, apply mitigation measures for structural and delivery risks, and prepare technical progress reports for senior stakeholders.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, structural engineering or a closely related discipline from a recognised university.
- Active registration as a Professional Engineer with the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) is mandatory.
- At least 10 years of relevant professional experience managing commercial, industrial, institutional and high-rise residential builds.
- Hands-on experience supervising piling works, including bored or driven piles and pile load testing, plus deep foundation construction, is a strong advantage.
- Solid technical knowledge of concrete technology, structural steel, geotechnics and Kenyan building codes.
- Strong project management skills covering scheduling, cost control, contract administration and resolving construction claims.
- Proven ability to lead site teams, co-ordinate diverse stakeholders, communicate clearly and make sound decisions under pressure.
What We Offer / Why Join
This is a part-time professional appointment based in Kenya, with on-site co-ordination and structural supervision duties. Monthly compensation is KSh 150,000 – KSh 200,000.
