Role Overview
As a Kenya Sign Language Interpreter at Siloam Hospital, you will bridge the communication gap between Deaf and hard-of-hearing patients and the clinical teams caring for them. Working across consultations, admissions and follow-up visits, you will make sure that every symptom, question and treatment instruction is understood accurately in both directions. Your presence directly affects patient safety and dignity, because informed consent, correct diagnosis and proper adherence to treatment all depend on clear, faithful interpretation.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide accurate, real-time interpretation between Kenya Sign Language and spoken English or Kiswahili during patient consultations, ward rounds, admissions and discharge sessions.
- Interpret during sensitive conversations such as diagnosis delivery, consent discussions and treatment planning, preserving the exact meaning and tone of both parties.
- Accompany patients to diagnostic procedures, pharmacy counters and other hospital service points where communication support is required.
- Relay patient concerns, symptoms and questions to doctors, nurses and other staff with precision, and convey clinical instructions back to the patient in a way they can act on.
- Remain impartial and professional at all times, interpreting what is said without adding advice, opinions or omissions of your own.
- Handle all patient information with strict confidentiality, in line with hospital policy and applicable data protection requirements.
- Work collaboratively with the wider healthcare team, including helping colleagues understand how best to communicate with Deaf patients and when an interpreter is needed.
- Be available across departments and shifts as patient needs arise, adapting quickly to different clinical environments and specialties.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Certificate or Diploma in Kenya Sign Language (KSL), Sign Language Interpretation, or a related field.
- Demonstrable proficiency in Kenya Sign Language, with the ability to interpret fluently and accurately in high-pressure situations.
- Previous experience working in a healthcare setting will be an added advantage.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the confidence to work directly with patients, families and multidisciplinary clinical teams.
- Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion when handling sensitive medical information.
- A professional, patient-centred approach and the flexibility to respond to requests across different departments and service hours.
