Senior Project Manager

Role Overview

You will serve as the central project management anchor for a portfolio of investment-stage projects and grantee support initiatives, working remotely from anywhere in Africa. On a daily basis, you will build and maintain realistic workplans, sequence work across internal teams and external partners, monitor budgets, and ensure every deliverable meets quality standards and deadlines. This role is critical because the organisation relies on you to keep complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives moving forward without losing sight of competing priorities, reporting obligations, or the bigger strategic picture.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain, and actively track detailed workplans for projects and initiatives under your portfolio, updating them as scope, resources, or timelines shift.
• Coordinate cross-team delivery by liaising with team leads and functional counterparts so that projects stay aligned even when ownership spans multiple departments.
• Identify risks, bottlenecks, and conflicting deadlines early, then escalate complex issues to senior leadership with clear options for resolution.
• Partner with the finance team to monitor spending across grants, fellowships, events, and operational budgets, ensuring allocations remain compliant with organisational and donor guidelines.
• Act as the primary point of contact for external partners and stakeholders, providing regular progress updates, managing expectations, and routing concerns to the right internal teams for action.
• Lead the preparation of programmatic and compliance reports, ensuring data from monitoring metrics is accurately captured and that reports receive timely internal review before submission.
• Maintain organised document and record-keeping systems for project communications, editorial production workflows, engagement campaigns, events, and partner correspondence.
• Stay current with project management methodologies and deepen your understanding of the civic technology, media, and social impact fields the organisation operates in.

Requirements & Qualifications

Required

• At least four years of project management experience, with a strong preference for backgrounds in development, civic technology, or social impact settings.
• Proven experience managing complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives where priorities and deadlines routinely compete for attention.
• Hands-on ability to design, track, and adjust workplans, and to keep even the most detailed schedules clear and actionable.
• Experience with budget management, including allocating and monitoring funds across grants, fellowships, events, and organisational spending.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor updates to donors, journalists, technical teams, and internal leadership.
• Strong working knowledge of project management tools such as Asana, Trello, Google Workspace, or equivalent platforms.
• A high level of organisation and attention to detail, especially when managing simultaneous deliverables across dispersed teams.
• The ability to stay calm, solution-oriented, and decisive when projects encounter pressure, setbacks, or sudden changes.
• Fluency in English and a work location within Africa, with remote or hybrid work arrangements supported.

Preferred

• Experience building and managing relationships with media institutions, government bodies, international organisations, educational institutions, technology providers, and not-for-profit actors in the civic tech and media space.
• Track record of coordinating multiple projects, partners, and team members across different time zones and cultural contexts.
• Comfort working with diverse professional groups such as software engineers, journalists, trainers, and data analysts.
• A deep, current understanding of Africa’s technology, media, and digital innovation ecosystems.
• Working knowledge of French, Arabic, or other African languages.
