Security Assistant

Role Overview

This position keeps a university residence safe and welcoming by combining proactive security work with everyday student support. You will patrol the building, manage access points, respond to emergencies, and help create an environment where residents feel protected and at ease. Your daily actions directly support both the safety protocols of the property and the overall quality of student life.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out regular foot patrols across the residence, checking common areas, corridors, and entry points for hazards or unusual activity.
• Serve as a visible, approachable point of contact for students and visitors, answering security-related questions and providing calm assistance during concerns.
• Oversee the gate pass and visitor log, verifying identities, issuing temporary access, and ensuring all entries and exits are accurately recorded.
• Act as a first responder during fire alarms and other emergencies, guiding occupants to safety and coordinating with the security team leader until external responders arrive.
• Participate in annual fire drill exercises, helping to test response readiness and suggesting improvements to emergency procedures.
• Spot maintenance problems that could affect safety—such as broken locks, faulty lighting, or damaged doors—and report them to the appropriate maintenance team for prompt resolution.
• Enforce the residence's security policies consistently, reminding residents of tenancy rules when needed and escalating repeated violations to leadership.
• Keep detailed incident logs, noting what happened, who was involved, and what follow-up actions were taken so that information can be shared across shifts.

Requirements & Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent qualification.
• At least 1 to 2 years of experience working in a security role, ideally in a residential, campus, or customer-facing environment.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact politely and clearly with students, staff, and visitors from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to stay composed and make sensible decisions under pressure during emergency situations.
• Sharp observational skills and a detail-oriented approach to identifying suspicious behaviour, safety risks, or inconsistencies in access records.
• Working knowledge of basic security systems, including CCTV monitoring, alarm panels, and access control tools.
• Flexibility to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and public holidays, as the residence requires round-the-clock coverage.
