Job Description

Role Overview

This position sits at the intersection of technical crop science and commercial growth. You will spend your time in the field as much as in the office, advising farmers, agrovet operators, and institutional buyers on the right inputs while actively building a pipeline of new business. Your agronomic credibility will open doors, and your ability to convert that trust into repeat orders will directly determine the company’s market share across the region.

Every day brings a fresh mix of diagnosing crop problems, recommending fertiliser programmes, negotiating with distributors, and tracking sales performance. The role matters because the company relies on you to be its eyes and ears on the ground—spotting emerging customer needs, feeding market intelligence back to the team, and ensuring that technical advice translates into tangible revenue growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and execute a territory sales plan that breaks down annual revenue goals into monthly and quarterly actions, then adjust tactics based on real-world results.
  • Prospect relentlessly: call on agrovet shops, smallholder farmers, large commercial farms, cooperatives, and institutions to expand the customer base beyond existing accounts.
  • Conduct on-farm diagnostic visits to identify pest, disease, or nutritional issues, then prescribe specific products with clear instructions on rates, timing, and safe handling.
  • Prepare itemised quotations and product proposals tailored to each customer's crop cycle, budget, and production goals, and follow up until the order is closed.
  • Organise demonstration plots, field days, and training sessions that show farmers the measurable benefit of recommended inputs, turning technical knowledge into selling opportunities.
  • Track competitor activity, local pricing, and promotion strategies across the territory, and report actionable insights to inform stock and marketing decisions.
  • Coordinate with warehouse and procurement teams to flag fast-moving products, potential shortages, and slow-moving inventory before they become problems.
  • Maintain a disciplined record of sales calls, customer interactions, pipeline stages, and target performance using spreadsheets and simple CRM tools.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in agronomy, crop science, horticulture, plant protection, or a related discipline; a diploma may be accepted when backed by demonstrable sales success.
  • At least two to four years of hands-on experience selling agricultural inputs—agrochemicals, fertilisers, seeds, or animal health products—to agrovets, distributors, or commercial farms.
  • Proven ability to meet or exceed sales targets while delivering technical advice that earns repeat business and customer loyalty.
  • Solid working knowledge of crop production cycles, common pests and diseases, integrated pest management, soil fertility, and fertiliser programmes.
  • Familiarity with the local agricultural market landscape, including typical customer pain points, seasonal buying patterns, and competitive pressure points.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and presentation skills, with the confidence to address groups of farmers at demonstrations or field days.
  • Self-motivated work ethic with excellent territory planning, time management, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in basic office software and sales reporting tools; a working knowledge of veterinary products is a plus but not essential.
  • Willingness to travel extensively across the assigned region, including to remote farm locations, and comfort with irregular hours during peak planting seasons.
