Role Overview
Operate high-power tractors ranging from 247 to 280 kW to prepare estate land for sugarcane cultivation, using deep rippers, heavy-duty disc harrows and related implements. Your work will help establish consistent soil conditions by matching implement settings and operating methods to the field, while caring for complex machinery and flagging maintenance issues promptly.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out primary and secondary tillage, deep ripping, levelling, residue incorporation and seedbed preparation with the appropriate tractor and implement.
- Set ripper tine spacing and working depth to suit soil conditions, and monitor fracture patterns and travel speed to achieve effective soil shattering.
- Adjust disc angle, operating depth, levelling and implement alignment; inspect blades for wear and report when service is needed.
- Operate hydraulic, PTO and three-point linkage controls carefully, checking that tractor and implement settings are suitable for the task.
- Adapt speed, traction and operating parameters to changes in soil moisture, resistance, terrain and implement load.
- Track work rates, hectares completed per hour and fuel use per hectare, and use this information to monitor field efficiency.
- Observe tractor and implement performance, identify abnormal conditions and communicate technical concerns clearly to the maintenance team.
- Follow safe operating practices and maintain consistent care of the machine throughout field operations.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Valid NTSA Class G12 heavy agricultural equipment operator licence and any other mandatory operator competency documentation.
- At least six years of hands-on experience operating high-power agricultural tractors in commercial farming, plantation development, land preparation or a similarly demanding setting.
- Practical experience with deep rippers and heavy-duty disc harrows in intensive land preparation operations.
- Sound understanding of soil mechanics, compaction, hardpan formation, moisture, traction and tillage principles, including factors that affect ripper performance and soil fracture.
- Ability to operate and adjust heavy disc harrows, including managing disc angle, working depth, levelling, blade condition and alignment.
- Working knowledge of tractor hydraulics, pressure and flow requirements, PTO systems, three-point linkage, ballast and weight distribution, with the ability to identify basic faults.
- Ability to monitor field output and fuel efficiency, and adjust machine settings to changing conditions.
- Familiarity with GPS-guided machinery and precision farming systems; experience with GPS/RTK-guided field work is an advantage.
- Clear communication, teamwork, situational awareness and a disciplined approach to machine care and safe operation.
- Experience in large-scale sugarcane farming, agricultural estates or commercial plantation development is an advantage.
