Job Description

Role Overview

IG Sacco is seeking an executive leader to head the Society and its subsidiary businesses, working directly with the Board of Directors. The role owns the translation of the Society's long-term ambitions into annual operating plans, budgets and measurable results — expanding membership, deposits, lending and institutional capital while holding risk, compliance and governance to a high standard. It is also the public face of the institution, carrying the SACCO's interests into conversations with regulators, partners, delegates and members, and shaping both financial performance and institutional reputation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Convert the Society's vision, mission and strategic objectives into costed business plans, annual work programmes and performance targets that the Board can approve, monitor and hold management to.
  • Serve as principal adviser to the Board on financial performance, market shifts, emerging risks and growth opportunities; sit on the Board as an ex-officio member, implement its resolutions and policies, support its committees and individual members, and enable regular evaluation of Board effectiveness.
  • Drive growth across the membership base, deposit mobilisation, loan portfolio, revenue, institutional capital and uptake of products and services offered by the SACCO and its subsidiaries.
  • Oversee budgeting, treasury and liquidity, capital adequacy, investment decisions, cost control, and the preparation of accurate management, financial, risk, audit and regulatory reports delivered on time.
  • Protect asset quality and run the full risk agenda — credit, liquidity, operational, financial, cybersecurity, compliance, strategic and reputational — backed by sound internal controls, disaster recovery arrangements and business continuity planning.
  • Keep the Society compliant with the Co-operative Societies Act, the Sacco Societies Act, SASRA requirements and all other applicable statutory and regulatory obligations, and keep the Board properly briefed on its duties; follow through on internal audit, external audit and regulatory review recommendations.
  • Champion the digital transformation agenda, process improvement, cybersecurity and data protection, and sponsor the development of innovative, competitive, member-centred products.
  • Lead the workforce agenda — staffing, performance management, training and development, reward and retention — while building a culture of integrity, accountability, innovation and strong member service, and representing the SACCO to members, regulators, government agencies, financial institutions, development partners and other stakeholders.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education and professional standing

  • A bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, business administration, co-operative management, commerce or a closely related field from a recognised university.
  • A master's degree in business administration, finance, strategic management, co-operative management or a comparable discipline is an added advantage.
  • Registration with the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) and membership in good standing; membership of any other relevant professional body, also in good standing.

Experience

  • At least seven years of relevant professional experience, including a minimum of ten years spent in a senior management or executive leadership position.
  • Demonstrated track record within a SACCO, co-operative institution, bank, microfinance institution or another regulated financial services organisation.
  • Evidence of delivering on strategy execution, business growth, financial management, credit administration, risk management, corporate governance and organisational transformation.
  • Solid working knowledge of the SACCO business model and of Kenya's co-operative and financial services regulatory environment.
  • Proficiency with business, financial management and digital applications used in a modern financial institution.

Competencies and personal attributes

  • Strategic and visionary leadership combined with strong commercial and financial acumen.
  • Uncompromising personal integrity, sound ethical judgement and a clear understanding of corporate governance and Board–management relations.
  • Results orientation, resilience, accountability, and strong analytical, decision-making and problem-solving capability.
  • Persuasive communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
  • Proven ability to steer organisational change and transformation, with a genuine grasp of digital financial services, cybersecurity, data protection and emerging technologies.
  • Capacity to recruit, motivate, develop and retain high-performing teams, with a commitment to excellent member service and the principles of the co-operative movement.

Chapter Six Clearance Requirements

The successful applicant must satisfy the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya and will be expected to provide the following documents:

  • Certificate of Good Conduct from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (police clearance).
  • Tax compliance certificate issued by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
  • Clearance certificate from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
  • Clearance certificate from a Credit Reference Bureau (CRB).
