Rapid Response Rider

Role Overview

This is a field-based roadside response role for a rider-mechanic who is dispatched by motorcycle to stranded motorists — anywhere from a dead battery in a parking bay to a collision blocking a busy carriageway. Most of the working day is spent on the road, moving between callouts, diagnosing faults at the kerbside, and getting members and their vehicles moving again or handing them over to a recovery partner. The position exists because a fast, competent first responder on two wheels can reach breakdowns that a tow truck cannot, cutting the time a member spends exposed to traffic and turning a stressful incident into a handled one.

Key Responsibilities

• Attend callouts for vehicles that will not start, confirm whether the fault is a discharged or failing battery, deliver a safe jumpstart and advise the member on whether the battery needs replacement or further testing.
• Carry and dispense emergency fuel, coolant, brake fluid and other essential motoring fluids to members who have run dry or are losing fluid at the roadside.
• Replace flat tyres using the member's spare, and repair or re-inflate punctured and under-pressured tyres with portable air equipment at correct and safe pressures.
• Run portable OBD-II scans to interpret dashboard warning lights and stored fault codes, clear minor electronic faults where it is safe to do so, and explain the findings to the member in plain language.
• Carry out minor mechanical quick-fixes that restore drivability — addressing basic overheating, checking and refitting loose belts, and reconnecting minor electrical wiring — and recognise clearly when a fault is beyond roadside repair.
• Stabilise breakdown and accident scenes by placing cones and reflectors, moving the member and vehicle out of high-risk lanes where possible, and compiling an accurate written account of the scene for the insurer's report.
• Assess whether a vehicle needs heavy recovery or a flatbed tow, then log and coordinate the request through the dispatcher or dispatch app so the recovery crew arrives with the right equipment.
• Keep the assigned response motorcycle serviced, fuelled and clean, and maintain a complete, ready-to-use stock of emergency tools, diagnostic equipment and safety apparatus at all times.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Valid driving licence with a Class A (motorcycle) endorsement plus Class B.
• Certification in motor vehicle mechanics or auto-electrical work, or a diploma/certificate in automotive engineering from a recognised institution such as NITA, Kenya Polytechnic or the AA Technical Institute.
• At least two years of practical, hands-on experience in automotive repair, diagnostic troubleshooting or garage service work.
• Prior experience as a rescue or roadside assistance officer is a distinct advantage.
• Confident working knowledge of the major highways, shortcuts and bypasses across the operating region (for example the Nairobi Metropolitan area), along with solid skill in GPS navigation apps and dispatch software.
• Strong customer care manner and clear communication skills, including the ability to explain technical faults without jargon.
• Demonstrated trustworthiness and integrity, since the role involves handling members' vehicles and personal property.
• Commitment to riding in full defensive gear and to working strictly within NTSA traffic guidelines and the organisation's road safety standards.
