Role Overview
This role sits where vehicle design meets the shop floor: you take engineering intent and convert it into drawings, jigs, fixtures and process instructions that fabricators, welders and assembly technicians can actually build to. Day to day you will move between SolidWorks models, production layouts and live build problems, adjusting designs and methods so that bodies, components and sub-assemblies come together accurately, repeatably and at a sensible cost. Your output directly affects how quickly and how cleanly vehicles leave the line, which is why this position carries genuine ownership rather than a purely desk-based drafting brief.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and revise 3D models in SolidWorks, turning concept changes or design updates into parts and assemblies that can be manufactured without rework loops.
- Generate and interpret 2D drawings and 3D data for the shop floor, covering dimensions, tolerances, materials and joining details.
- Design, trial and refine production tooling such as jigs, fixtures, checking aids and templates, along with the station layouts and build sequences that use them.
- Maintain the documentation a build depends on — bills of materials, routing information, work instructions and drawing registers — keeping it aligned with the released design.
- Investigate fitment, dimensional and process faults as they appear, trace them back to their root cause in design, tooling or method, and see the correction through to verification.
- Work shoulder to shoulder with fabrication, welding, assembly and quality teams to prove out new methods and confirm finished parts meet specification.
- Target measurable improvements in cycle time, scrap, rework and material usage, and put forward the design or layout changes that deliver them.
- Confirm that designs, tooling and production methods satisfy the relevant engineering, quality and safety requirements before they are released to the floor.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Mechanical, Production, Automotive or Manufacturing Engineering.
- A minimum of two years in a comparable production or manufacturing engineering position, ideally within motor vehicle manufacturing, fabrication, automotive assembly or a similar production setting.
- SolidWorks is the primary design tool in this role, so hands-on proficiency is non-negotiable: part and assembly modelling, drawing creation and revision management.
- Confident reading and interpretation of engineering drawings, dimensional tolerances and technical specifications.
- Practical grounding in fabrication, welding, machining and assembly processes would be a strong advantage, particularly where those processes feed a vehicle build.
- Analytical, methodical problem-solving — the patience to gather evidence before committing to a change.
- Willingness to work hands-on in a live production environment, including time spent out on the floor alongside the build rather than only at a workstation.
- Clear communication with both engineering colleagues and production teams, in writing and in person.
