Role Overview
This occupational therapist provides direct rehabilitation care to patients referred for occupational therapy, guiding them from initial assessment through discharge planning. Day to day, the role involves setting functional goals, delivering and adjusting treatment, educating patients and families, and coordinating with assistants or interns. The position matters because it helps patients regain independence, keeps rehabilitation services safe and effective, and supports department quality, equipment readiness, and stroke-program objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess newly referred patients, identify functional needs, set measurable treatment goals, and select suitable occupational therapy interventions.
- Deliver individual treatment sessions and adjust plans based on ongoing re-evaluation of progress, response, and changing needs.
- Educate patients and family members about therapy, home strategies, and ways to support recovery or functional independence.
- Evaluate the need for assistive, supportive, and adaptive devices, and incorporate them into care plans.
- Document daily treatment notes, progress evaluations, discharge planning notes, and discharge summaries in line with professional and hospital standards.
- Delegate suitable patients to assistants or interns with clear treatment plans, supervise their work, and assign tasks to physiotherapy assistants and service attendants as needed.
- Prevent infection by following hygiene protocols, and help keep equipment functional through routine maintenance, monitoring, and testing to reduce downtime.
- Follow hospital policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines; take part in clinical and service audits, quality improvement, patient safety programs, department planning, continuing education, and assigned CCPC stroke program duties.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma in occupational therapy from a recognized or accredited institution or college.
- Active registration with the Kenya Occupational Therapy Association.
- Current basic life support certification.
- Preferably at least one year of experience working as an occupational therapist.
- Ability to assess patients, plan and modify treatment, evaluate assistive device needs, and document progress and discharge planning.
- Capacity to supervise assistants, interns, and support staff, follow infection control and safety rules, and work within hospital policies and quality standards.
