Role Overview
This position places you at the centre of a busy healthcare facility along Thika Road, where you will ensure every patient receives the correct medication, clear instructions, and safe pharmaceutical care. You will report directly to the Head of Pharmacy and take responsibility for dispensing accuracy, inventory discipline, and full compliance with Pharmacy and Poisons Board regulations. Your daily attention to detail prevents errors, reduces wastage, and keeps the pharmacy running smoothly for every patient who walks in.
Key Responsibilities
- Verify prescriptions for correctness, dosage, and potential interactions before preparing and dispensing both prescription and over-the-counter medicines.
- Explain to patients exactly how to take each medication, what side effects to watch for, and how to store medicines at home.
- Handle over-the-counter enquiries at the counter, referring any condition that needs medical attention to the appropriate clinician.
- Maintain strict confidentiality when handling patient medical histories, dispensing records, and pharmaceutical documentation.
- Monitor stock movements and reorder levels, conducting regular inventory counts and applying First-Expiry, First-Out protocols to prevent expired medications from remaining on shelves.
- Store cold-chain products, controlled substances, and general pharmaceuticals under the required temperature and safety conditions.
- Receive and inspect incoming supplies from approved distributors, confirming quantities, quality, and documentation before signing off.
- Keep dispensing logs, prescription registers, and dangerous drug records complete and ready for internal audits and official PPB inspections.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from a recognised institution.
- Current registration with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) and a valid practising licence.
- At least 2 years of hands-on experience in a busy hospital pharmacy or retail community pharmacy.
- Strong working knowledge of pharmacology, therapeutics, brand and generic equivalents, and prescription safety checks.
- Precision in pharmaceutical calculations, labelling, and drug measurements, with zero tolerance for guesswork.
- Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to explain instructions patiently to patients from different backgrounds.
- Willingness to work full-time on-site along the Thika Road corridor, with reliable transport or accommodation near the facility.
