Role Overview
The Pharmaceutical Technologist manages the daily work of a pharmacy, from receiving and tracking medicines to dispensing prescriptions and advising patients. Accurate records, safe handling of products, and thoughtful patient support help maintain reliable pharmacy services and responsible commercial operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate the pharmacy in accordance with applicable regulations, approved procedures, and quality and infection-control standards; keep the workspace clean and safe.
- Check incoming medicines for correct quantities, product condition, and quality, and maintain statutory and internal records, including controlled-drug registers and temperature and humidity logs.
- Store, dispense, and bill stock using first-expiry-first-out practices; monitor availability, update HMIS inventory records, place replenishment orders, and document missed sales through designated channels.
- Process every sale through the HMIS, apply discounts only as authorized, deposit cash according to policy, and reconcile shift sales figures against payment reports.
- Review relevant patient history in the HMIS and dispense prescriptions accurately against prescriber instructions; explain how to use medicines and offer appropriate preventive-health guidance.
- Support a respectful, responsive patient experience by addressing questions courteously, attending to concerns promptly, and minimizing avoidable waiting time.
- Send weekly, useful updates to headquarters on procurement, stock, and pricing, and share observations about clinical-team collaboration, competitor activity, seasonal demand, and factors affecting service or sales.
- Protect pharmacy assets, maintain transparent records and transactions, and follow expectations for professional presentation, including approved attire and identification.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from a recognized, accredited institution; a bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy or Pharmaceutical Sciences is an advantage.
- Current, valid Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya (PPB) licence, with no record of disciplinary action or suspension.
- At least two years of practical pharmacy experience in a busy retail, clinic-based, or hospital setting.
- Experience using a health management information system (HMIS) is strongly preferred; familiarity with pharmacy management, dispensing, and billing software is an advantage.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets for stock tracking and reporting; experience with digital health tools is beneficial.
- Careful, dependable approach to dispensing, documentation, stock control, cash handling, and reconciliation, supported by strong personal integrity.
- Clear, empathetic communication skills and a patient-first manner when explaining medication use or responding to concerns.
- Ability to take ownership with limited supervision and remain composed while managing high patient volumes.
