Job Description

Role Overview

This is a frontline triage and outpatient nursing post at a busy health and wellness centre, where you are the first clinical point of contact for every patient who walks in after registration. You will assess, prioritise and route patients according to how urgently they need care, then stay involved through treatment, medication administration, minor procedures and follow-up. The role matters because the speed and accuracy of your initial assessment directly determines whether severely ill or injured patients get seen in time, and because you carry the centre's infection control, record-keeping and youth-friendly service standards into every encounter.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive patients after registration, take and accurately record vital signs, and carry out an initial clinical assessment that determines the level of attention each person requires.
  • Perform triage in the treatment room, giving the highest priority to the severely sick or injured, and refer patients onward to the appropriate provider or service.
  • Build written care plans around each patient's needs, monitor how well interventions are working, and adjust the approach accordingly.
  • Administer medication safely, observe and document patient responses, and report any adverse reactions without delay.
  • Carry out minor procedures such as wound cleaning and dressing, stitching and nebulisation, plus routine instrument processing and sterilisation of equipment.
  • Keep patient files and records accurate and current while safeguarding the integrity and confidentiality of personal health data.
  • Maintain a ready emergency tray and adequate medical supplies at every service delivery point, and document consumable use so that billing and stock records stay correct.
  • Deliver maternal and child health services and youth-friendly services, and provide health education to patients, young people and Kakenya students.
  • Uphold infection prevention and control principles and waste management guidelines, and keep the admission and triage area clean, orderly and safe.
  • Report unusual clinical and non-clinical findings to the Supervisor and the KHWC Administrator, and take part in outreach activities, continuous medical education sessions and periodic medical reporting.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Community Health Nursing from a recognised institution.
  • Current registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • Certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • A Diploma in Counseling from a recognised institution is an added advantage.
  • At least two years of relevant nursing experience in a busy health facility.
  • Prior experience in a youth-friendly facility is an added advantage.
  • Solid working knowledge of nursing, medical care and counselling standards and procedures, with evidence-based familiarity with current outpatient general nursing practice.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in both English and Kiswahili.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, stay attentive to detail and report accurately under pressure.
  • Compassionate, honest, disciplined and self-driven, with integrity, respect for others and a genuine commitment to community wellbeing.
  • Comfortable working with minimal supervision and with basic computer literacy.
  • Willing and able to work long hours, including late evenings, night emergency calls and weekends.
