Mechanic – Self Propelled Harvester (SPH/Valiant)

Role Overview

This position keeps the estate’s self-propelled tea harvesters running reliably throughout the cropping cycle. The mechanic diagnoses faults, performs scheduled maintenance and emergency field repairs, and carries out full overhauls so that harvesting crews are never held up by avoidable machine downtime. Since these machines feed directly into the estate’s tea output, consistent mechanical care also protects crop quality and supports the safety of everyone working around the equipment.

Key Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues on self-propelled harvesters and decide the most effective repair approach.
• Inspect machines regularly, identify worn or failed components, and carry out repairs on site or in the workshop.
• Strip down and rebuild harvester engines, drive systems, cutting units, and other major assemblies to the required operating standards.
• Attend emergency breakdowns in the field, diagnose the fault quickly, and carry out repairs with minimal loss of harvesting time.
• Service and repair hydraulic circuits, including pumps, valves, hoses, and cylinders, to maintain correct pressure and smooth operation.
• Perform simple welding and fabrication tasks on machine guards, frames, and attachments to keep equipment functional and safe.
• Maintain service records, analyse repair costs, request quality spare parts, and ensure safe custody of tools, spares, and equipment.
• Guide harvester operators on safe operating practices and improve their technical ability to prevent unnecessary machine damage.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Diploma in Automotive Engineering, Motor Vehicle Mechanics, or Mechanical Engineering with a plant option.
• Minimum three years of relevant hands-on experience maintaining self-propelled harvesters, agricultural machinery, or heavy mobile equipment.
• Strong diagnostic ability across diesel engines, hydraulic systems, steering, braking, and electrical circuits.
• Experience in dismantling, overhauling, and reassembling mechanical components to manufacturer specifications.
• Certificate in auto-electrician work or welding will be an added advantage.
• A multi-skilled driving licence covering Classes B, C, E, and G is preferred because field breakdowns and machine movement are regular parts of the role.
• Discipline in maintaining records, controlling repair costs, and complying with environmental, health, and safety regulations.
