Role Overview
As a Heavy-Haulage Modular Trailer Driver, you will take charge of prime movers and multi-axle modular combinations moving oversized plant, machinery, and project cargo across Kenya and occasionally beyond. Each trip demands careful planning, precise manoeuvring, and constant vigilance over load security, route restrictions, and regulatory compliance. Your work directly enables construction, energy, and industrial projects to receive the equipment they need without damage, delay, or safety incidents.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate modular trailers, lowbeds, and extendable heavy-haulage combinations over long distances, including through ports, construction sites, narrow roads, and congested urban areas.
- Perform start-of-day and end-of-journey checks on the tractor unit and trailer, covering tyres, brakes, lighting, steering, suspension, coupling, hydraulics, and air systems.
- Oversee the positioning, weight distribution, and securing of abnormal or heavy loads before departure, and re-check restraints at every stop to ensure nothing shifts in transit.
- Follow approved route plans and abnormal-load movement requirements, liaising with traffic authorities and escort vehicles as needed to ensure safe passage.
- Coordinate with banksmen, loading teams, and site personnel during pick-up and delivery, directing reversing, tipping, or unloading operations with clear communication.
- Maintain accurate trip documents, delivery notes, inspection records, and proof-of-delivery paperwork for every consignment.
- Report any mechanical defects, cargo damage, accidents, near misses, or safety concerns immediately, and stay ready to troubleshoot minor mechanical issues on the road.
- Keep the vehicle clean and roadworthy, complying with driving-hour limits, speed restrictions, vehicle tracking, and all internal HSE policies at all times.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Minimum KCSE certificate or equivalent academic qualification.
- Valid NTSA Class CE driving licence with at least five to seven years of professional commercial driving experience.
- No fewer than three years of hands-on experience operating articulated trucks and heavy-haulage combinations, including low-loaders, modular trailers, extendable trailers, or abnormal-load transports.
- Proven track record moving heavy machinery, industrial equipment, or oversized project cargo is strongly preferred.
- A recognised defensive driving certificate is an added advantage.
- Working knowledge of Kenyan road networks, axle-load limits, NTSA rules, Traffic Act provisions, and route-planning for abnormal loads.
- Solid understanding of load securing methods, weight distribution principles, and basic heavy-vehicle mechanical inspection.
- Disciplined, dependable, and physically alert, with the patience and composure to handle long hours, challenging terrain, and high-pressure delivery timelines.
