Locum Medical Officer

Role Overview

This position leads clinical service delivery across the hospital’s wards, ensuring patients receive timely, protocol-driven care from admission through discharge. The role blends hands-on medical and surgical duties with team supervision, quality oversight, and coordination of referrals, making it central to maintaining safe, effective, and responsive hospital operations. You will act as a key decision-maker on the ground, managing emergencies, supporting staff, and driving continuous improvement in patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead daily ward rounds across maternity, adult, pediatric, stabilization, and isolation units, verifying that case management follows established protocols and documenting patient progress accurately.
• Perform elective and emergency obstetric, gynecological, and general surgical procedures in theatre, including on-call coverage on a 24/7 rotating basis.
• Run weekly specialized clinics (such as SOPC, GOPC, HRC, MOPC, and POPC) and attend to medico-legal cases, including completing P3 forms and representing the hospital in court when required.
• Supervise and coordinate clinical and nursing staff, including duty rosters, leave planning, disciplinary matters, and performance management to meet departmental targets.
• Manage emergency and elective referrals to secondary and tertiary facilities, ensuring prompt transfer and follow-up.
• Lead quality improvement and death audits, documenting action points, and reporting ward trends, needs, and surge mitigation plans to the Medical Officer In Charge.
• Ensure survivors of sexual assault receive immediate care at the GBV centre, and facilitate community feedback mechanisms to capture and respond to concerns.
• Act on behalf of the Health Manager when absent, coordinate continuous medical education, and participate in morning handover and clinical staff meetings.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) from a recognized institution.
• Active registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board.
• At least two years of clinical experience in a busy hospital setting.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Strong teamwork, flexibility, and results orientation; comfortable multitasking in a challenging environment.
• Proficiency in MS Windows, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for documentation and reporting.
